The Frightmare Compound: The advantage here is that the Westminster mainstay is built on the owner’s property, and makes you feel like you’re entrapped in an old abandoned mining town. You’ll get swampy grounds, old barns, and a second haunted house for the same ticket. “The House of Darkness” boasts flesh-eating psycho clowns that play with you. If you’re afraid of clowns, and not a fan of darkly lit areas, this haunted area isn’t for you…or, if want to be scared to death, it is! Waiting in line isn’t such a hassle due to the magician performing tricks.

This haunt is located at 108th and Old Wadsworth in Westminster. $22 gets you into both haunted houses on the property. Also if you purchase $100 worth of costumes in Underworld Costume Shop in Westminster (144th and I-25) you get a FREE ticket to Frightmare!

Scare Factor: 3.5 out of 5 (OK for some young kids)

Look:  5 out of 5 (improves every year)

Price to Haunt Ratio: 4 out of 5 (two houses, one price)

10798 Yukon St., Westminster, CO 80021

Haunted Field of Screams: Worth the price of admission for the simple fact it lasts a long time. (Roughly 30 minutes to get through the corn maze and haunt.) It’s one of the scariest encounters you’ll have! The cold eerie feeling as you walk through the empty area of the cornfield sets a mood that not only feels theatrical like you’re in a horror slasher film, but it actually causes you to scare yourself. The demonic “children of the corn” will taunt you at random places throughout.

This isn’t your ordinary corn maze, as there are many scary areas: An old elementary school, a hillbilly house, a school bus and more. This area has lots of room to run when the crazy chainsaw kids come running after you!

Scare Factor: 4.5 out of 5

Look: 2.5 out of 5 (could add more characters)

Price to Haunt Ratio: 3 out of 5 (the line is long so VIP is worth it)

South/East Corner 104th Ave. and Riverdale Rd., Thornton, CO 80233

City of the Dead: So, as soon as you park, you’re greeted by an 8-foot monster that chases and taunts you before buying your ticket. Once you enter, the area that once was a flea market event center is a creepy sideshow filled with FREE carnival games you can play before entering the haunted house. There’s a zombie-fied version of the popular kids game “Operation” with a twitching and convulsing corpse. Severed head basketball toss. Body part tic-tac toe. And zombie paintball target practice.

The Haunted house is another lengthy advernture through an entire Zombie Apocalypse city. You’ll enter houses of living dead watching game shows on TV, gas-masked mutated survivors, experiments gone awry, abandoned cars, etc. Beware of the VERY loud noises. Also, chainsaw killers have zero respect for you (or your hearing) but it’s beautifully designed like that. This haunt is so meticulously created and every inch is accented with realistic blood, bodies, hooks, etc.
