Longmont Ballot Issues

2A

Ballot issue 2A will upgrade Longmont’s wastewater system with $31.1 million paid solely from the city’s “wastewater utility enterprise revenues.” Given the flood destruction, this upgrade is badly needed. City Council approved a wastewater fee increase earlier this year, but it has not adequately funded the needed improvements. This will help protect St. Vrain Creek’s water quality, and there will not be additional rate increases with this bond—the issues has yet to receive any real opposition.

2B

A state law prohibited Longmont’s fiber optic loop (which has been around since the 1990s) from offering services since 2005. In 2011, a city vote did away with the restriction. Now City Council is asking residents to vote for $45.3 million bond to finally finance “capital improvements to provide high-speed broadband service” citywide. This is one of those about-time situations. Fiber optic speeds will attract more businesses and bring in much-needed revenue for Longmont.

YS votes Yes for: 2A, 2B
