In January the Chinese New Year was celebrated in Broomfield at the city’s Pacific Ocean Marketplace II. Red Lion dancers present at the event drew attention to the fact that by the Chinese calendar this is the Year of the Horse—though obviously not, if you’re a Bronco’s fan. (Oh snap!) Though they clinched the AFC championship with a 26-16 home win, the Denver Broncos moved on to opt out of such a victory in Super Bowl XLVIII, with a brutal loss to the Seattle Seahawks. And speaking of places that have legalized pot, this month, Canary’s Song in Nederland becomes the first recreational marijuana store to open in Boulder County. But while you’re up there getting your, uh, supply, beware of a hungry mountain lion who’s already killed at least one dog and another cougar in Boulder Canyon. Westminster citizens are keeping watch as the number of coyotes entering yards and attacking pets has been on the rise. A certain CU Boulder student is familiar with wildlife, too. After killing and skinning a raccoon, he’s now being considered for municipal violations after initially being dismissed of felony animal cruelty charges. And Erie approved the Golden Run development, which is slotted to be a dense community of multi-family buildings. The controversial project is supposed to be a carbon-neutral community as well as a jobs magnet for the town.

Small Talk

“We hope that with a reward, more people will keep their eyes open. We have a lot of people searching. We’re scared and pretty devastated, but we’re trying to be strong because we know he’d want us to be. He is the nicest person, he has the biggest heart.”

– Kevin Tallman of Lafayette. His son, Nathanial has been missing since January 21st, and anyone with information should contact the Lafayette police.

“When they [kids] start this way, they will learn how to be safe. It’s a good way for little kids to start.”

– Ivone Escobar of Broomfield who signed up her 9-year-old son for National Flag Football’s inaugural season this spring.

“We believe ‘RGS Energy,’ which has been our commercial-focused brand, better reflects the vision and capabilities of our entire company as a single source, end-to-end energy solutions provider for residential, commercial, and utility customers.”
– Bryan Conklin, RGS Energy’s vice president of marketing said of the Louisville-based company’s rebranding from Real Goods Solar Inc.

“I always wanted to be like him, just kind of in a different way. When I started free skiing it wasn’t Olympic. I just wanted to be at a professional level. It’s amazing that my dream as a kid has turned into a reality. I’m following in my dad’s footsteps.”
– Lyman Currier of Boulder, who will be competing in the Sochi games 42 years after his father raced for the U.S. Ski Team in the Sapporo Olympics.
