Drivers risk registration suspension and criminal charges for using fraudulent results.

DENVER — Monday, July 13, 2026 — The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit (MVIU) is alerting the public about a spike in fraudulent “print-on-demand” emissions test results being sold to unsuspecting drivers, warning that while these scams promise a passing result for a low fee, using them can lead to severe legal consequences including the immediate loss of vehicle registration and driving privileges.

As emissions compliance is a legal requirement for registration in many Colorado counties, scammers are exploiting drivers by offering fake certificates that bypass official testing.

“We understand that vehicle maintenance can be stressful, but these fake tests are a trap that isn’t worth the risk,” Benjamin Whittier, DMV’s Director of Vehicle Services, said. “The only way to ensure your test is valid and properly recorded in the state’s database is by using an official testing station.”

To combat the rise in fraudulent emissions tests, MVIU is investigating the production of these fake tests and seeking criminal prosecution where appropriate. These operations also focus on identifying and disabling websites that market illegal test results to ensure such products are permanently removed from the marketplace.

For 30 years, Air Care Colorado has served as the state’s trusted partner in providing accurate and cost-effective emissions testing. The DMV reminds residents that legitimate emissions tests can only be obtained through Air Care Colorado’s numerous testing stations or by driving through an official “Rapid Screen” roadside location. For diesel-fueled vehicles, visit a licensed diesel testing center.

Drivers are encouraged to verify their testing requirements and find official locations by visiting Air Care Colorado’s website.

This is the third installment of the DMV’s Summer Safety campaign. The previous installments covered registering and titling vehicles and fake temporary license plates. To learn more about the most common motor vehicle and driver scams and fraud, please click here.
