Minnesota folkie Charlie Parr has a new album, Stumpjumper, out on Red House Records, and he’s going to playing the Hi-Dive in March. All good reasons for a chat.C

Yellow Scene: You’ve been active since 2002. How do you think you’ve evolved in that time?

Charlie Parr: That’s a tough question. I’ve become more comfortable with songwriting. My playing has definitely changed a lot because I’ve had some health problems with my hand and I’ve had to readjust the way I play. Made me a little bit better a guitar player. Having more self-confidence around songwriting I think has made a big difference from those early records. I feel like I’ve come quite a ways.

YS: How do you describe your sound?

CP: Oh boy. Usually, I prefer to go with the folk singer tag. It changes from here to there. There are nights when I’m at home and lonesome and play the harmonica, but it definitely leans towards the folky end of the scale.

YS: And you have a new album out on a new label – exciting times…

CP: Yeah. I’m really happy with Red House It’s been a good fit so far.

YS: Do you like playing Colorado?

CP: Oh yeah. The Hi-Dive is fantastic. It’s one of my favorite venues in Denver. I’ve played a few places in Denver but the Hi-Dive kinda feels like home now.

YS: What’s next, after this tour?

CP: Well, when I get done with this tour I head for Australia for a month, and then in the summer time, I’ll be doing some festivals. Bum around, and then by the time the fall comes around again I’ll be working on a new record. It should be a busy year.

Charlie Parr plays with Betse Ellis (the Wilders) and R.L. Cole at 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 at the Hi-Dive; 7 S. Broadway, Denver; 303-733-0230; $10-$12.
