STITCHED: CONNECTING COMMUNITY THROUGH ABSTRACTION

FEB 10 – MAR 5, 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: FEB 10 [6-9 PM]
ARTIST TALK: FEBRUARY 19, 3PM-4PM
WITH AN ARTIST TOUR FROM 4PM-5PM

STITCHED: Connecting Community Through Abstraction features the work of Nancy Eastman, who confronts communal values and relationships to the local environment through colorful mediums and stylized threadwork. Eastman responds to the changing landscapes using found objects charged with their unique connection to Longmont’s agricultural history, such as crop and coop fencing. Eastman also incorporates organic materials such as fallen branches, and collaged photographs of local scenes to invite the viewer to reflect upon the memories we collectively share as a community.

Using processes such as painting, collaging and stitching, Eastman calls upon not only the viewer to reflect upon the changing local landscapes, but also to visually express their surroundings through their own creative agency. In a series of workshops, Nancy involved the community in creating pieces for the exhibit. For the first workshop, Nancy introduced the meditative quality of yarnwrapping natural elements found on the land of each participant, asking participants to use the quiet time to connect with the land. For the second, Eastman and members of the community created representations of their personal neighborhoods, which Eastman will stitch together for a community “quilt” – further saturating the communal conversation.

Eastman’s playful abstract representations of her environment, in concert with the local community’s are stitched together – poetically reminding us of our collective consciousness through familiar, yet constantly changing landscapes.

South Gallery: “Textured”, featuring works by Alicia Kim, Patricia Aaron and Diane Deyo

Nancy Eastman gathers three artists using texture and abstraction in their response to the land, and people on it. Featuring collaborative monoprints by Patricia Aaron and Alicia McKim and Masks and Beaded works by Diane Deyo: These three artists use abstraction, pattern and form in many textural variations.

We will also be hosting an artist talk on February 19th from 3pm-4pm with an artist tour to follow.
