Colorado DMV warns against use of fake temporary license plates

Counterfeit “print-at-home” tags lead to impoundment and criminal charges

DENVER — Tuesday, June 30, 2026 — The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit (MVIU) is issuing an urgent warning regarding the surge of fake temporary license plates, noting that drivers caught using these fraudulent tags face severe legal repercussions, including vehicle seizure, steep fines, and potential jail time.

State investigators have identified a growing trend of drivers purchasing fake “print-at-home” tags from unverified online sellers to avoid vehicle registration fees and taxes.

“Our investigators are seeing more people attempt to bypass the law by printing their own plates or buying them from an unauthorized third party,” MVIU’s Agent in Charge Darin Icardi said. “While some may think they are simply avoiding fees, the reality is that the legal costs will catch up to you. We urge all drivers to protect themselves by obtaining tags only through official, legal channels.”

To combat the rise in fraudulent temporary tags, MVIU is investigating the production of these fake plates and seeking criminal prosecution where appropriate. These operations also focus on identifying and disabling websites that market illegal plates to ensure such products are permanently removed from the marketplace.

The DMV reminds the public that the only legitimate sources for temporary plates are local county motor vehicle offices or licensed, authorized automobile dealerships at the time of purchase. Using these official sources ensures that a vehicle is properly entered into the state’s motor vehicle database, providing legal protection for the owner and ensuring the vehicle is properly insured.
