Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) launches new program to reduce environmental impacts of the building sector

July 15, 2026 – DENVER – Power Ahead Colorado, a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments, is now offering a heat pump rebate and free energy advising for homeowners and businesses across the region.

A heat pump uses electricity to efficiently heat and cool indoor spaces and can replace a furnace and air conditioner, including a window air conditioning unit. Eligible customers can receive $1,500 off the equipment price of an ENERGY STAR-rated, cold-climate heat pump installed by a verified Power Ahead Colorado contractor. The rebate can be combined with other available rebates and incentives.

To help residents combine savings and plan projects, Power Ahead Colorado also provides free energy advising for homeowners and businesses. Energy advisors are real people who are available by phone or email to answer questions about home electrification, heat pumps, and energy savings.

“We know the decision to switch to a heat pump can feel like a big one,” said Mac Prather, Power Ahead Colorado Rebates and Incentives Manager. “By lowering the upfront cost of a heat pump and by offering free energy advising, we want to make this decision as easy as possible for homeowners and businesses with aging heating and cooling systems.

It’s important to look at the whole home when switching to a heat pump, not just the equipment. Working with a verified Power Ahead Colorado contractor can help customers choose the right system to achieve the most efficiency and comfort.

“When it comes to heating and cooling, customers want options that are both practical and cost-effective. We’re focused on making it easier to choose energy solutions that work for all homes and budgets,” said Emmett Romine, vice president of Customer Energy and Transportation Solutions at Xcel Energy. “We’re excited to see Power Ahead Colorado launch a heat pump rebate that, when combined with Xcel Energy rebates and others, helps make upgrading to a heat pump more affordable.”

Over the next four years, Power Ahead Colorado will invest $40 million in making energy upgrades more affordable for homeowners and building owners across the Denver Metro region.
