Boulder begins building transit efficiency improvements at 2 intersections on Broadway

Project supports safer, more accessible travel on high-traffic street with 12,000 daily bus riders

BOULDER, Colo. – The City of Boulder has begun constructing intersection improvements and a segment of dedicated bus lane on Broadway, or CO 93, at Regent Drive. The Broadway Transit Improvements Project will reduce delays, significantly improve bus travel time and reliability, and install complementary safety and accessibility improvements for all travelers. Work will impact driving, biking, walking, and taking the bus, including through daily vehicle lane closures and a temporary closure of the northbound and southbound Broadway and Regent Drive bus stops, which will be rerouted to the Broadway and Euclid Avenue stops. The Broadway multi-use path will be detoured through the CU Main Campus for approximately three months. Construction will take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Work at the Broadway and Regent Drive intersection is scheduled to be completed by mid-August to minimize travel impacts when school is in session. Once complete, further south at the intersection of Broadway and Table Mesa Drive, improvements, including adding a southbound bus left-turn lane, will begin and finish by the end of 2026. Once complete, additional improvements will begin further south at the intersection of Broadway and Table Mesa Drive and finish by the end of 2026, including adding a southbound bus left-turn lane.

Broadway between Regent Drive and Table Mesa Drive is a key local and regional transit corridor where over 12,000 people ride the bus every day. Today, traffic congestion during the busiest times of day slows these people’s travel, especially at the Table Mesa intersection, where there are greater delays for left-turning buses than for any other vehicle. Adding dedicated lanes for buses while maintaining the number of vehicle lanes will support reliable travel times and improve safety for all who use the corridor.

The project is funded in part by $3.98 million from the Colorado Department of Transportation and a Transportation Improvement Program grant distributed by the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG). This work is one of several ongoing projects on Boulder’s Core Arterial Network (CAN) initiative. The CAN is a years-long comprehensive roadway redesign effort toward safer, more connected, and more comfortable travel on 13 key, high-traffic streets. The project also supports city transportation goals, local climate goals, and regional policies to provide the community with convenient, sustainable, and reliable travel choices.
