Grounded is a celebrated George Brant play about a female fighter pilot whose sky-fighting career is ended by pregnancy. She switches to piloting drones, and then battles the guilt as she witnesses the devastation that she causes. A one-woman show starring Laura Norman, Grounded will run for two weeks during January in Boulder. We spoke to Norman and director Josh Hartwell to see what we could expect.G

Yellow Scene: Josh, can you tell me a little about the story of Grounded?

Josh Hartwell: It’s about a woman who is a fighter pilot – she flies F16s in Iraq and then, at one point while on leave, she becomes pregnant. When she has her child, she still wants to be in the air force so she goes back to the air force and she becomes a drone pilot. It’s about the effects that piloting drones and seeing all the damage that she does – the effect that all of that has on herself, her family, and her mental health.

YS: Laura, have you ever performed a one-woman show before?

Laura Norman: I have not. It’s very demanding. I had to approach it a few different ways. Initially, going into rehearsal, the most challenging thing I was finding, other than the daunting task of learning the whole show, was not having any other actors on stage.

YS: Who is the play for?

JH: There’s some lightness to it, but it’s mostly a heavier show. But, just for Laura’s performance, I think it’s a show for everybody. The subject matter is important and it’s current, and I would say that younger audiences are great for this show.

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company presents Grounded at the Dairy Center of the Arts between Thursday, January 8 and Sunday, January 18; 26th & Walnut St., Boulder; 303-444-7328; betc.org; $16.
