Hearing the news of the leaked draft by Justice Samuel Alito to Politico Monday night, we knew the streets would be filled yesterday – and they were.

While the Court calls the leak a betrayal, others call the person who leaked the draft a hero for exposing the partisan efforts to strip bodily rights away from women by calling for the end of Roe v Wade.

While the same people who support ending Roe v Wade refused to wear a mask in public for the health of all, they fail to understand that both refusing to wear a mask during a Global Pandemic and calling for the end of the right to an abortion – harms all of society.

The last 60 years of social progress are under attack with this decision by Justice Alitio. “Packing the courts” has been a planned operation by the Republican party for years. We all remember Mitch McConnell famously laughing about blocking Obama’s appointment to the Supreme Court with his statement, ‘Most important decision I made in my entire political career.’

Many speculate that the rise of women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ citizens in the workplace and governing has those who have traditionally held that power (white men) fearful. Stripping women of the right to choose to terminate a pregnancy is the first step to stripping ALL marginalized and oppressed groups of social advancement.

Many fear they are next. The LGBTQIA community was out side-by-side with cis-gender men and women, as well as elected leaders including Representative Leslie Herod, Senator Julie Gonzales, Majority Leader Daneya Esgar, Representative Meg Froelich, Representative Brianna Titone, Attorney General Phil Weister, alongside many community activists who helped lead the charge to sign into law, HB22-1279:  Reproductive Health Equity Act; Concerning the codification of a person’s fundamental right to make reproductive health-care decisions free from government interference.

While Colorado might be protected at this time, this assault on social progress should be concerning to all.

As marchers chanted: “We won’t go back, We will fight back,” the Supreme Court has an ethical decision to make, uphold justice for all, or act on behalf of partisan politics. Right now, with Justice Samuel Alito’s draft, it appears they are in dangerous territory of dismantling all trust that has been gained with their institution.

“We won’t go back, We will fight back,”
