Good afternoon –

Hate Free Colorado is a diverse group of community and law enforcement partners who are dedicated to countering hate crimes in Colorado. The Anti-Defamation League provides leadership and guidance to the coalition.  The coalition currently has over 18 members from a variety of civil rights and advocacy organizations in Colorado, as well as seven law enforcement partners.  For example, our District Attorney’s Office, Out Boulder, and the Boulder Police Department are members. It is a priority for our office. With the strong support and partnership of community partners and law enforcement agencies, we launched the Bias & Hate Crimes Initiative in response to the nationwide increase in hate crimes.

The results of Hate Free Colorado’s statewide hate crime survey are out – and they demonstrate that more work needs to be done. The study found that about 30 percent of adults in Colorado have experienced hate crimes, including verbal harassment, property damage or physical injury. That’s 28 percent of adults, based on the pool of survey participants. Nearly 3 in 10 adult Coloradans said they experienced a hate crime or bias-motivated incident in the last five years. Coloradans must stand together to say that hate has no place in our state.

Learn more about the survey and recommended actions on the Hate Free website: www.hatefreeco.org. Also, you can read this article on the survey results:  www.cpr.org/2022/10/04/colorado-hate-crime-rates

Shannon Carbone
