NEDERLAND, CO – May 18, 2023 – Ignite Adaptive Sports and Eldora Mountain are excited to celebrate the
groundbreaking of a new Ski & Ride School building. An event attended by local officials and organization leaders
held yesterday marked the beginning of construction on the building project, slated for completion in 2024. The
building has been designed to increase the capacity for adaptive athletes at the mountain, and to create a more
accessible learning experience for both adaptive and young skiers and snowboarders in the region.
“We are thrilled to be starting construction on this new building at Eldora and getting that much closer to opening
the doors for our visitors,” said Brent Tregaskis, Eldora’s General Manager. “This project has been an important
priority due to its significant impact on the adaptive athlete experience, and for our young learners as well. Through
our Play Forever commitment, focused on supporting the community and protecting the environment, we continue
to invest a great deal in our partnership with Ignite, and are excited to collaborate with them to bring this beautiful
new building to life.”
Totaling 12,000 square feet, the first floor will house Ignite’s snowsports operations, while the second floor will
house Eldora’s Ski & Ride School. An elevator from the first floor to a bridge above the second floor will provide
adaptive access to the mountain.
“With this building comes the confidence of knowing that no potential athlete will be turned away due to space
constraints,” said Tom Kissinger, president of Ignite’s board of directors. “We continue to be grateful for our
partnership with Eldora Mountain Resort and their commitment to making mountain sports accessible to adaptive
athletes.”
Established in 1975, Ignite Adaptive Sports is the second oldest adaptive winter sports program in Colorado. The
non-profit program began when a small group of dedicated volunteers from the University of Colorado provided ski
lessons to 10 students with disabilities to enhance their lives with access to Colorado’s alpine beauty. Ignite has
seen tremendous growth and enthusiastic support from the Colorado community, and 100% of the organization’s
lessons continue to be provided by trained and passionate volunteers.
Collectively, Ignite’s volunteers provide more than 18,000 hours of service to deliver more than 1,200 individual
lessons to more than 300 students with disabilities each season.
The building will also create more space for the education of mountain athletes of all kinds. With Eldora’s Children’s
Ski & Ride School in this new facility, Eldora’s other instructional programs will gain more space in the existing Ski
& Ride School facility, Indian Peaks Lodge.
“Our instructors are thrilled to have a new space where they will be able to better focus on the individual learning
experience for young ski and snowboard students, thanks to the addition of this new building,” said Tim Kenney,
director of Eldora’s Ski & Ride School. “Adult learners will continue to be welcomed at Eldora as well, with more
space made available in our existing facility by the new building’s construction.”
