We wrote that the Cork was and is Boulder’s quintessential perfect restaurant years ago when they won our BOW (even before we were distributed in Boulder). It still is. Congrats on nearly 25 years of wins. But it’s not like YS is their first win; they have been a celebrated legacy for over 54 years.

We have loved Sugarbeet since it opened in 2006. Another set of pioneers brave enough to explore the “wild” in East County, this 14x winner continues to shine under the loving direction of Ben and Ari. As stewards of Longmont’s legacy establishment, they ensure everything is always perfect for the diner.

Emphasizing local, sustainably-sourced ingredients is a sure-way to any Boulderites heart, which is one of the reasons why SALT the Bistro is an iconic lunch spot in the area. This restaurant brings items like organic produce, and grass-fed wagyu to the table to bring purpose behind every meal.

Winner: Village Coffee Shop

When you walk into the Village Coffee Shop, you aren’t there just for pancakes and eggs. You are there for the people. Shanna and her husband Ryan, took over the Village from the original owner after working there for years.. They changed nothing. It remains, ‘7 Square miles of Reality Surrounded by Boulder,’ with a whole lotta love for their patrons—including the Village Virgins.

Winner: Moxie

If you have ever taken a morning walk through downtown Louisville, you have likely seen the line of happy, hungry people ready for their morning fresh-baked bread or pastry. Deeply embedded in the local community, Moxie has won this title every year in a landslide since opening in 2015. Moxie uses grains sourced from small family farms in the western United States, prioritizing sustainability and conscientious work environments.

Moxie’s location in North Boulder not only sells the delicious baked goods that can be found in Louisville but also locally sourced pre-made foods or ingredients to make your own treats. When you are supporting Moxie in Boulder, you are also supporting local farms and small businesses.

Winner: Button Rock Bakery & Kenny Lou’s Deli

It seems impossible that anyone in the county hasn’t visited Button Rock. Named after their family’s love of the local preserve, their heart for their community was built intentionally and contributes to their success. They are always giving back to the community, and recently raised $10,000 for the LA Fires.

Winner: Shamane’s Bakery

Within this Boulder bakery you will find expansive flavors that were created from love and time around the globe. Inspirations birthed in Colorado but swept through Asia and Europe, whilst using locally sourced ingredients from the local farmer’s market. Beyond Chef Shamane’s delightful pastries, Shamane’s also hosts a cafe that’s equally pleasing.

If you woke up this morning with breakfast on your mind, you are in luck! Tangerine, Boulder County’s best breakfast spot, is where you want to be! They’re famous for seasonal benedicts and an array of inspired healthy breakfast options made from scratch. All that goodness shows, they have won Best of the West for 10 years running.

Boulderites will remember this breakfast institution tucked in the old Best Western on 28th. This next generation upgrade across the street has been serving healthy breakfast since 1995 when Jacqui and Chris Meyers seized an opportunity and brought their own style to the Buff. Choose from an assortment of tasty breakfast options accompanied by 99 cent bloody Marys or mimosas. This is the place to be if you are hungry for breakfast.

For 25 years, YS has conducted this survey, and our readers have written in Santiago’s for the winner in the breakfast burrito category. Owner Carmen Morales safely guards her mother’s green chile recipe, which she made for her husband three times a day. She says it’s the secret sauce that keeps customers coming back.

If you can’t decide if you’re feeling spicy or mild it’s the perfect introduction to this Colorado staple.

At the foot of the mountain, this historic inn built in 1873 and serving delicious farm to table meals since 1967 is the best place in Boulder to enjoy brunch. The property has two ponds and an impressive 20 acres to wander around and search for wildlife before or after a quiet meal on the warm patio. Give yourself an afternoon to wander and enjoy.

An annual favorite among Colorado locals for at least 10 years in a row, Waterloo is known for its motto: “God Bless Johnny Cash,” and its colorful musical aesthetic. And its texan-style burger menu is just as captivating with 1/2 pound bison, beef and chuck options on the menu.

The Sink was featured in YS’s 25 Businesses 25 Years or Older and is a 25-year BOW winner. Celebrating 100 years, it’s one of Boulder County’s longest-running businesses. With visitors like President Barack Obama, need we say more?

Craving Chinese food? Head to The Wok in Lafayette! Chef Yuki Chen’s lunch special is unbeatable, and her fresh, delicious dishes—like crispy egg rolls and the best Sesame chicken—come with a warm, family-style welcome and leftovers.

There’s a reason why Zoe Mama ended up on the Michelin Guide. This counter-service restaurant is unassuming and easy to overlook. Yet Chef Zoe’s attention to detail, traditional-style cuisine and fresh ingredients make this restaurant one of the best value options in town, which has led to at least 10 wins on Best of the West.

Coffee House EC

Winner: Cristo’s Coffee

In-house coffee roasting is one of many reasons why Cristo’s Coffee house is a standout business for a cup of joe. While this is Cristo’s first time on the BOW list, it likely won’t be the last. Owners Jessica and Barry Luginbill are just as passionate about ethically-sourced beans as they are about fostering community and thoughtful spaces.

Winner: Ozo Coffee Company

There’s a reason why Ozo has 5 locations across Colorado. This coffee shop chain specializes in single-origin brews. Founded almost 20 years ago by Justin Hartmin, this business brings quality and expertise to every drink. It’s no wonder why Ozo has been a Best of the West Winner for at least ten of those years.

Gluten-Free EC

Winner: Button Rock Bakery & Kenny Lou’s Deli

Living a gluten-free lifestyle comes with challenges and limited choices—zucchini noodles, salads, and cheese plates only go so far. Button Rock Bakery & Kenny Lou’s Deli intentionally create savory and sweet options for all diets, including sushi, NY deli-style sandwiches, burgers, and incredible latkes. Their variety of gluten-free desserts is surprisingly inclusive, ensuring no one is left out.

Wayde Jester has been running the Zeal Food empire since 2013, when he decided to bring his vision of food to life. He believes that food should be nourishing, and be good for the planet. This ethos shows itself in its finely-crafted gluten-free menu, which led them to their first time first-place win!

Whether you live gluten-free or want to go gluten-wild in your desserts, Button Rock Bakery & Kenny Lou’s Deli has a pastry case that will make your mouth water. Local. Family-owned. Handmade. These three words define Boulder Baked. With seven genres of cookies and 28 flavors—including my favorite, Chocolate Butterscotch—they truly have something for everyone. Craving vegan or gluten-free treats? They’ve got those too. So go ahead—grab a cookie, cupcake, cake, or ice cream. Or why not all of the above?

Winner: Snarf’s

Walking into a Snarf’s feels like stepping into a cartoon program from the 90s, and the sandwiches are just as memorable. Jimmy Seidel set out to create the best sandwich in the world in 1996, and the result was Snarf’s. Today, Snarf’s locations are all over the Colorado area, and the business is a 25-year winner, showing its true domination over the local sandwich industry. Making it even more special, this “chain” is still locally-owned by Jimmy.

Winner: Santiago’s

We all know Santiago’s for its iconic supply of breakfast burritos, but this restaurant also has some of the best green chili in Colorado. It’s so good that the restaurant owners literally bottle it up and sell it at local grocery stores. Santiago’s has also been a Best of the West winner for their Green Chile for 25 years.

Efrain’s Mexican Restaurant, Boulder CO

Winner: Efrain’s of Boulder

Head to Efrain’s of Boulder and try the best green chili in town.  Efrain’s has won this award for close to 25 years.  That’s because everything they do is made the old-school way, the way Efrain’s grandmother taught him. The food itself has an even longer history. This authentic Mexican cuisine is of the Northern Chihuahua variant. ¡Vamos!

Winner: Taj Mahal 3

Taj Mahal 3 has been tickling the palate with authentic Indian food for more than 20 years in Louisville, and has been collecting Best of the West awards for at least half that time. The menu is inspired by northern Indian cuisine, bringing a variety of creamy curries and classic meals to the table.

Winner: Tiffin’s India Cafe

Tiffin’s India Café in Boulder opened its doors in 2010. Initially offering an all-vegetarian menu focused on authentic Indian street food, the restaurant expanded its offerings as its popularity grew. Today, their menu includes a wide range of non-vegetarian options. This dedication to authenticity has earned them this year’s first-place award.

Runner Up: Jaipur

 

Italian EC

Winner: Parma Trattoria

Famous for their mix and match mozzarella bar that is unmatched by any restaurant in the area, the fresh local ingredients make everything on their menu worth trying. This group of local owners has a vast array of experience in the Boulder area. Their desire at Parma is to provide a variety of traditional Italian dishes with the freshest authentic ingredients possible. Step into their dining room with its cozy feel and warm fireplace, select a glass of wine from their expansive selection and enjoy this Italian experience.

Runner Up: Gondolier Italian Eatery

Carelli’s has been a Best of the West Winner for nearly 25 years, solidifying its status as one of Colorado’s best-loved restaurants. The restaurant had a humble beginning as a simple sandwich shop but quickly evolved to be a full-scale Italian restaurant after captivating Boulderites.

Runner Up: Bacco Trattoria & Mozzarella Bar

 

Mexican EC

Winner: TeoCalli

The son of the restauranteurs who created Gunther Toody’s, Grant Hopfendpirger, set out to bring authentic Mexican cuisine to Lafayette. Expanding to three locations since 2019, TeoCalli brings in customers with clean, fresh and authentic dishes created by a Mexican-born chef who grew up in the kitchen with his mother cooking the daily fresh catch. Give the carne asada taco a try, which consistently wins local food competitions, including ours!

Winner: Efrains Boulder

There’s no place like Efrain’s. When they moved out of their tiny hole-in-the-wall on 63rd, we worried they might lose their magic—but they didn’t. They brought their recipes with them and continue to win Best of the West, no matter where they set up shop. After 28 years in business, Efrain’s is just as good today as it was in 1991, with 25 years of BOW awards and a fiercely loyal following to prove it.

Winner: Acreage

Acreage lives up to its name. Sip your favorite drink while enjoying mountain views or lawn games in the ‘Back 40.’ The menu delights with options like Cauliflower Steak and the Thai Salmon Burger. Reservations recommended, but the Back 40 is always open. Make the most of this stunning property.

Winner: Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse

The most unique spot on our list, Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse is a stunning place to enjoy tea while admiring its breathtaking architecture. Designed by artisans from Tajikistan, this Central Asian gem features intricately carved beams, vibrant colors, and ornate ceilings that transport you to another world.  Sip your tea and soak in the details, or explore a diverse menu featuring flavors from Thailand, Sweden, Slavic regions, and beyond. A visit here is as much about the experience as the cuisine and beverages.

As a multiple-year category winner, Piripi has cemented itself into Old Town Erie culture. Popping in for lunch, you’ll run into a welcoming, stylish dining room that feels like a hidden gem in an austere building. The seating area widely expands with a generously sized covered patio. Carnivores —  give the bacon-wrapped dates a try and be prepared to share. Tip: There is a double order in the takeout menu.

What’s left to say about Snarf’s that hasn’t been written every year they win? We remember when Jimmy opened ‘The Shack’ in 1996 on East Pearl Street in Boulder. We had no idea if he would make it, but those sandwiches kept us coming back. Decades later, Jimmy proves you can build a sandwich empire without losing soul, flavor, or integrity. He’s as committed to being a good human as he is to making a great sandwich. Snarf’s is still winning, still irresistible, and still a 25-year champ!

If you haven’t been to Piripi’s monthly Paella night on the first Monday of every month, you are missing not only a culinary treat but an authentic family dining experience. If you’re a seafood fan with companions who don’t share your passion, there is a wide selection of tapas, entrees, fresh pasta, and salad options crafted in-house by BOW-winning chef Hugo Meyer.

Winner: JAX Fishhouse & Oyster Bar

There was that time our publisher ordered three dozen oysters in front of an appalled date. But what else are you supposed to do at Boulder’s top seafood house. Jax has been the go-to choice for ethically sourced seafood in Boulder for almost 35 years and has won just about all 25 years.

Pizza EC

Winner: Urban Field Pizza & Market

Urban Field specializes in Detroit-style square pizzas, characterized by a crispy, thick crust with caramelized cheese edges. And that is exactly why they draw travelers from all around the country for a slice of pizza. Although the restaurant is relatively new, its quick rise to success can be attributed to its doughy crust, fresh toppings, and chef-inspired menu.

Runner Up: Rosalee’s Pizzeria

Winner: The Sink

If you’re boring and basic in your pizza adventures, then The Sink might be too cool for you. Rustic crusts with a hint of honey are the cornerstone to their delicious pies. In business for over 100 years, The Sink is iconic Boulder even drawing a visit from President Obama. You can try the pizza he ordered by getting the 44.

Winner: 740 Front St

740 Front is a staple for Louisville residing on a historical landmark but they have made their own footprint here. Their expertise in prime cut steaks keeps a steady fanbase but their unreserved menu gives room for many delicious courses. Whether you are a regular or celebrating all feast in delight.

The Boulder Cork has been around since 1969, showcasing an evolving menu with fine-flavour. In the 25 years that YS has been publishing the Best of the West, Boulder Cork has been a winner every single year due to its fresh ingredients, signature cut steaks, and always perfect service.

Sakura is one year older than YS, and we’ve been eating there since early 2001. They’ve won Best of the West for nearly as many years. Chef Kho spent a decade mastering Japanese cuisine in New York before opening Sakura with his family in Longmont in 1998. Known for his signature ‘Kho creations,’ the dishes are as authentic as they come. You’ll be greeted with a cheerful ‘Konichiwa’ and an elbow bump upon entering—and leave knowing you’ll be back.

Runner Up: Kenny Lou’s Deli at Button Rock Bakery

Hapa Sushi, Multiple Locations

Winner: Hapa

If you want a visual experience with your meal Hapa brings their A game. Continually expanding, their menu allows room for the novice and adventurous alike. Even if you don’t want to ruin their artistry, clear your plate. Don’t forget to eat the orchid.

Runner Up: Japango

Winner: Busaba

Busaba started as a single, always-packed location—and for good reason. The recipes are authentically Thai (seriously, don’t ask for Thai hot unless you mean it!). Thankfully, SP saw the vision, and now we can enjoy Busaba in Boulder, Longmont, Erie, and the original Louisville, where all four locations still fill up nightly. That’s how good Busaba is—and why they’ve won every year since opening in 2010.

Winner: Aloy Thai

Aloy’s name came from Aroy, the Thai word for delicious, to remind diners the delicious food that you can find at Aloy Thai every time you stop in. The five local chefs take pride in providing a wide variety of healthy Thai and Asian inspired dishes. Fast friendly service with the absolute best Coconut curry in the area!

Runner Up: Busaba Thai Eatery

 

Vietnamese EC

Winner: Pho Cafe

“Best pho Eva” was the first thing I read about Pho Cafe, a locally owned strip mall restaurant in Lafayette. Tempted by sesame chicken, I opted for rare steak pho instead—and wasn’t disappointed. Opened by Kevin Choung in 2011, this community favorite continues to thrive, serving delicious dishes and local charm.

Runner Up: Jennie’s Kitchen

Winner: Chez Thuy

Since 1992, when Chef Thuy moved to this unassuming standalone restaurant on 28th Street to test the market for Asian cuisine in Boulder, Chez Thuy has been serving a wide variety of inspired dishes that honor her Vietnamese heritage. Locals and visitors alike stop by for delicious, authentic meals. This casual restaurant, complete with a full bar, is perfect for a lunch with friends or a delightful date night. Don’t miss the pad Thai or the Vietnamese coleslaw.

Winner: Marco’s Hot Dogs & Taco’s

Stop eating at Marco’s—this is our little secret! This funky hot dog and taco stand has no tables, no chairs… just a long line. And for good reason. Those bacon-wrapped Mexican dogs are to die for. (Seriously, we need to stop talking about it—the line keeps getting longer.) Our go-to order? One dog and two tacos, as authentic as they come.

Winner: Mustards Last Stand

If only I could find a Chicago-style hot dog spot in Boulder. And better yet, one in the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame! Well, wish granted. Mustard’s Last Stand is the place for an authentic Midwest-style hot dog, loaded with all the classic ingredients. Stop by once, and we promise—it won’t be your last time.

Teocalli, Lafayette and Arvada CO

 

Winner: TeoCalli

Most notable for being Boulder County’s fully gluten free kitchen, but seriously with their carne asada quesadillas and three salsa platters, who needs gluten?  There are two locations in Boulder County with year round indoor/outdoor seating options! The unique fresh takes give happy hour a whole new meaning.

McDevitt’s Taco Supply, Boulder and Denver CO

Winner: McDevitt Taco Supply

McDevitt Taco Supply delights with creative tacos like the chicken “Lightning” or vegetarian sweet potato and black bean options. A lively bar, spacious patio, and commitment to the Boulder community has made this relative newcomer a local favorite.
