ARVADA CENTER 2026-2027 THEATRE SEASON SINGLE TICKETS NOW ON SALE

July 7, 2026 – Arvada CO – The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities today announced that single tickets are now on sale for their upcoming 2026-2027 Theatre Season. On stage this season will be five shows to thrill you, delight you, make you laugh, and make you feel. We hope you find what moves you in our upcoming theatre season. The 2026-2027 Theatre Season Presenting Sponsor is Intermountain Health.

The season kicks off with Misery, the psychologically-thrilling play adaptation of the best-selling Stephen King novel about a famous author’s number one fan… who becomes his number one threat. Then to lighten things up, Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park is a charming comedy that shares a slice of newlywed life for two people who are very different. For the holiday musical, we welcome the triumphant return of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a joyous explosion of catchy music, high-energy dancing, and one famous rainbow coat.

In the spring, Doubt: A Parable will explore a complex web of faith, truth, and doubt, leaving audiences questioning what they believe long after the play is over. The season ends with Dear Evan Hansen, a contemporary musical that deals with needing to belong in a modern world that is both hyper-connected and disconnected by social media.

BOULDER, Colo. — Motus Theater will be recognized with the Creative Expression Award from the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice (NACRJ) at its 10th National Conference on Community and Restorative Justice, taking place July 7–10, 2026, in New Orleans.

The national award honors the role of art, storytelling, culture, and creative practice in advancing healing, justice, and community transformation. NACRJ’s recognition of Motus Theater celebrates the organization’s JustUs Project, a multi-year autobiographical storytelling initiative that supports community leaders impacted by carceral systems to tell artfully crafted personal stories that expose the devastating impact of the criminal legal system and inspire action toward a vision of true justice.

Launched in 2019, Motus Theater’s JustUs Project includes three subprojects: JustUs League, featuring monologues from men impacted by incarceration; Boundless Truth, featuring stories from Black women leaders who were formerly incarcerated; and Youth Behind & Beyond Bars, featuring adults who survived incarceration as youth.

Together, these performances lift the curtain on the realities of the criminal legal system while centering the leadership and lived experience of people most directly impacted by incarceration. Through Motus’ signature autobiographical monologue development process, storytellers develop personal narratives through months of writing, collective discussion, performance training, and trauma-informed support, preparing them to become story ambassadors for the millions of people impacted by carceral systems.

“This award belongs first to the JustUs monologists, who trusted Motus with their stories and then chose to share them as a public gift,” said Kirsten Wilson, Founder and Artistic Executive Director of Motus Theater. “Their courage helps audiences move beyond statistics, stereotypes, and punitive narratives, and toward a deeper understanding of what safety, accountability, repair, and belonging can look like. We are grateful to NACRJ for recognizing creative expression as essential to the work of community and restorative justice.”

Motus Theater’s JustUs performances have toured across Colorado and the United States, engaging with prosecutors, judges, attorneys general, law enforcement officials, legislators, corrections leaders, faith leaders, advocates, artists, and community members. In Motus’ innovative performance model, over 50 public officials and civic leaders have been invited to stand on stage with JustUs monologists and co-read their stories aloud: an embodied act of listening that asks leaders to step, however briefly, into the lived experience of people impacted by the systems they help shape.

In 2026, Motus Theater brought Youth Behind & Beyond Bars to the Colorado Capitol, where legislators and advocates heard directly from men incarcerated in Colorado as children. The performance engaged the long-term impacts of youth incarceration and the possibilities created when policy invests in prevention, healing, and community-based solutions.

One Youth Behind & Beyond Bars storyteller reflected on the purpose of the work: “Everything that we’re doing together through Motus is to stop our community from going through the trauma we’ve been through. To tell my story, as something to learn from, is all I could ask for.”

Continuing in this effort in September, Motus’ Youth Behind & Beyond Bars storytellers will perform for over 1000 professionals at the Colorado State Public Defender Annual Conference, taking place September 27 in Denver, Colorado.

Motus Theater extends deep gratitude to the JustUs monologists and storytellers, collaborating artists, community partners, staff, board, funders, and civic leaders who have helped bring these stories to audiences across the country since 2019.

Nix the Multiplex for Flix This Summer

Recapture the charm of going to the movies

This summer, Colorado theatergoers have a lot to look forward to. As blockbuster franchises dominate multiplexes across the country, a quieter, more personal movie culture is thriving in Colorado’s independent theaters. Throughout Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, and North Boulder, local cinemas and arts venues are offering audiences something rare: curated films, repertory classics, filmmaker discussions, and communal experiences that streaming services and oversized, multi-screen theaters cannot replicate.

From restored screenings and community discussions at the Boulder Public Library to classics and new films at the Boedecker Theater, this summer there is a great deal for theatergoers to anticipate.

The new silent palace

On warm evenings in Boulder, moviegoers can be seen gathering outside the Dairy Arts Center long before the doors to the Boedecker Theater even open. There is noticeable excitement as moviegoers discuss which Hitchcock film should earn the title of his greatest work, while others scan posters for upcoming documentary film festivals, silent film nights, and new independent releases from Sundance or Cannes.

Inside the Boedecker Theater, which is located within the Dairy Arts Center, audiences regularly encounter films that they would not be able to find at a standard chain megaplex. The Boedecker has become one of Boulder’s most important destinations for arthouse cinema and independent filmmaking. Audiences may spend one weekend revisiting classic silent films and return a few days later for a new international drama or environmental documentary.

Just twenty minutes down the road from the Boedecker is The Alamo Drafthouse. The Alamo has the unique distinction of being a theater that runs new releases while also curating its own film selections. Moviegoers can go from watching the newest superhero movie one day to watching an international or independent horror film the next. The theater offers a highly curated selection of films, from localized independent productions to the newest blockbusters.

One of the hallmarks of the Alamo is its laser-focus on the experience. It has a strict no-talking and no-phone policy. Any visitor talking or using a device is given only one warning before being asked to leave. This creates the perfect atmosphere for theatergoers looking to get lost in the world of their new favorite film.

The Alamo also offers plenty to discuss when it comes to its dining menu. Before the movie, guests browse a huge menu with everything from standard popcorn to fresh stone-baked pizzas.

The classic American film-going experience

For those looking for a more relaxed, yet classic film experience, there are also various drive-in theaters near Boulder. The Dairy Arts Center and 88 Drive-In Theater both feature classic drive-in experiences that enhance even the most traditional movie. Connecting your car radio to the correct station and heading into the concession stand to fill up on popcorn and nachos can make the most mundane blockbuster feel exciting.

Extending the viewing experience

In Longmont, the Longmont Museum Stewart Auditorium has built a strong reputation for eclectic film programming that blends education and entertainment. Its screenings frequently include foreign films, documentaries, classic films, and community-centered events. The venue draws a broad audience from all walks of life, from college students discovering classic film history to retired cinephiles.

The Dairy Arts Center film program is curated by a team of movie lovers, all with interests in different areas of film. They work together to blend their tastes, and what emerges is a thoughtful, well-rounded program. The Dairy Arts Center states on its website, “Community is what sets Dairy Cinema apart from the commercial theater experience. We believe that the cinema experience should extend beyond the screen.” The organization continues by explaining that their club conversations are designed to form deeper connections with both the community and cinema.

The programming that these independent theaters offer reflects a broader philosophy shared by many independent cinemas: movies are meant to be discovered, discussed, and experienced collectively.

Over the last decade, streaming services have transformed the way people consume media, especially cinema. Nearly every film imaginable can now be watched instantly from a phone or from the comfort of a couch. Yet these independent theaters, along with countless others across the area, have found that audiences still crave the ritual of moviegoing, especially when theaters offer curated programming rather than traditional blockbusters. Streaming films offer convenience, but independent theaters offer context.

Cinema as community

When audiences attend a screening at one of these independent venues, the film does not exist in isolation. A screening of the classic Citizen Kane might include an introduction discussing the film’s revolutionary cinematography and its influence on modern filmmaking. A documentary screening may feature local activists or scholars speaking afterward. These additions transform a movie from passive entertainment into an active cultural event.

In Lafayette, organizations like The Arts HUB are helping expand that sense of community-centered cinema even further. Although smaller than traditional theaters, arts venues throughout Lafayette increasingly host film festivals, local filmmaker showcases, and independent screenings that bring residents together. The smaller scale of these events often makes them feel intimate and collaborative. This intimacy is difficult to replicate in traditional multiplexes built around speed and volume.

Independent theaters and arts venues also play an important role in preserving film history. For younger audiences raised primarily on streaming services, these screenings provide opportunities to experience older films the way they were originally intended to be seen: on large screens, in dark rooms, and surrounded by strangers.

From Boulder’s Boedecker Theater to Longmont’s museum screenings and Lafayette’s community arts venues, independent cinemas continue proving that moviegoing is not disappearing. If anything, it is evolving into something more intentional, personal, and deeply connected to the communities that support it.

No homework needed: “Gin & Gothic: A Brontë Rocktale” Returns In New, Interactive Venue

Any public school-attending high schooler has likely read works by the Brontë sisters, but you haven’t met them like this. Award-winning theatre group, Band of Toughs (BoTs), returns on January 16th with “Gin & Gothic: A Brontë Rocktale” to delve into the lives (and afterlives) of the Brontë family at Altona Grange in Longmont.

“You don’t need to know anything about the Brontës to see it,” Colleen Mylott, one of the original co-founders of BoTs in 2010, said in an interview with Yellow Scene. “We make it accessible. For us, the organizing principle is “How is what they wrote resonant with us today?” To create, to be powerful, and to love each other?”

A previous iteration of “Gin & Gothic” was performed at DCPA, but in the “weird spaces” of the Ellie Caulkins Theatre, like in lobbies and loading docks.

“[Band of Toughs is] so slow and so indie that I always tell people, “It’s okay if you haven’t heard of us yet,” Mylott says with a chuckle.

“We picked Altona Grange because it most resembles the house we imagined the Brontës grew up in,” Mylott continues. “There are two different levels to it, and we’ve done the staging to fit the more intimate Boulder-Longmont setting. When you think of the Brontës, you think of the Moores. I would say the Altona Grange is the Colorado version of the Moores, or as closee as we can get to it, being in the Foothills. We’re using every square inch throughout the space. People are jumping through windows. It’s a great time.”

In this original production, we follow the tenacious and gifted Brontë siblings as they love, lose, and conceive some of the most famous literature of the 19th century. This 120-minute performance takes place indoors and outdoors (with heating), and involves short walks between locations*, including stairs. Seating will be provided.

The music in “Gin & Gothic” is a mix of covers and originals, featuring rebellious female-fueled rock by the likes of Susie and the Banshees and Joan Jett. Kamara Thomas, BoTs’ rock band leader of the Bertha and the Bed Burners (a nod to Jane Eyre), has also written three original pieces, including “Wildfire.”

“Personally, what called me in was the power of siblings and creativity,” Mylott says. “That felt really resonant to me. Their literature and how passionate they were–it’s heart-driven. It wasn’t the literature that got me in the room, it was the music and rock influences. We’re looking at them as rock stars of their own age. They’re a collective of rebellious women. It’s rebellious inspiration, mixed with modern music.”

“Gin & Gothic: A Brontë Rocktale” will be performed at Altona Grange in Longmont the weekends of January 16th and 17th, and 23rd and 24th. Local Theater Company Announces Creative Team of Season-Opening World Premier | Press Release

Boulder, CO – Today, Local Theater Company (LTC) announces the creative team, including cast, of its season-opening world premiere, Stockade, by Henry Award-winning playwright Andrew Rosendorf (Paper Cut, Local Theater Company, 2018) with Carlyn Aquiline, directed by Henry Award-winner Christy Montour-Larson (recently: The Minutes at Curious Theatre Company, 2023). Stockade is an LTC commission that was developed during Local Lab 13 (March 2024), directed by LTC Co-Artistic Director Nick Chase.

Set five years after the end of WWII, Stockade is an ensemble historical drama about a group of LGBTQ+ soldiers who gather on Fire Island at the height of the Lavender Scare, a period in which the US government was purging its ranks of “security risks,” code for homosexuals. The characters must choose between revealing their identities and having their personal and professional lives upended, or remaining in the closet and suffering under the scrutinous gaze of the US government.

Co-Artistic Director Nick Chase said, “There are waves of legislation washing over our country that are stripping individuals of their rights simply because of aversions to their identities. These are fear-based laws. Stockade examines a similar period in US history during which existing openly as a homosexual often meant professional collapse and social ostracization, if not worse. Shepherding such a work into the world requires a team that’s skillful, thoughtful, and sensitive. I’m proud of the group of theatermakers we’ve assembled.”

The design team includes scenic designer David Castellano (recently: Acts of Faith and Raised on Ronstadt, Local Theater Company), sound designer and LTC Associate Artist Max Silverman (recently: Acts of Faith, Local Theater Company), costume designer Nicole Harrison (professor, MSU; Guest Artist and Costume Shop Manager, Denver School of the Arts), lighting designer W. Alejandro Melendez (Recently: the disability-affirmative production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Phamaly Theatre Company at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts), and properties designer Wayne Breyer (recently: Letters of Suresh, Curious Theatre Company).

The cast includes two performers returning from the Local Lab 13 workshop/staged reading. Alex J. Gould returns as Hugh and Lisa Hori-Garcia returns as Kay. Additional cast members are Thadd Krueger (Cliff), Rakeem Lawrence (Eddy), Jacob Sorling (Glenn), and Simone St. John (Barb/Billy).

Additional team members include stage manager Lara Maerz (company manager, Pop the Holidays, Local Theater Company, 2022), assistant stage manager Caden Pazo (board member, Colorado Theatre Guild), intimacy choreographer Tammy L. Meneghini (recently: playing the titular role at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Elizabeth I: In Her Own Words, 2024), and associate intimacy choreography by Levi Franklin (LTC associate producer). Scenic construction is by University of Denver Theatre Tech Intern Program under the direction of Steven McDonald.

Stockade continues an enduring relationship between LTC and playwright Andrew Rosendorf. LTC presented the world premiere of Rosendorf’s Paper Cut in 2018 under the direction of Founding Artistic Director Pesha Rudnick. Paper Cut looked at the lives of two soldiers returning from service in Afghanistan during the early 2000s. Following the success of that production, LTC approached Rosendorf with the idea of commissioning another play that examines the experiences of LGBTQ+ US soldiers. Stockade is a thematic prequel to Paper Cut.

Executive Producer Misha S. Zimmerman said, “It has been a joy to watch this play grow from a spark of an idea when LTC commissioned it in 2020 into the beautiful story it is today. Supporting playwrights in their process is central to LTC’s mission and I think this play is a shining example of that. Each draft of the script has grown as Andrew and Carlyn have had the time to finesse their story drawing inspiration from many sources including deep historical research, audience feedback at Local Lab and astute questions from director Christy Montour-Larson, LTC’s Co-Artistic Directors and the designers. As we step into the rehearsal room next week it will continue to grow and I believe audiences will be in for a very impactful and entertaining night of theater.”

Description
