One thing that has proved painfully obvious in the past few years: People don’t like giving up luxury in the name of the environment. But if it costs more, it’s amazing how quickly many shed it. Environmentalists are trying to put a carbon tax before state voters in 2008 or 2009. There are three options being considered—none will be politically popular outside of Boulder. But it’s a more effective way to curb emissions than relying on voluntary efforts alone. Colorado School of Mines Professor Tom McKinnon is a primary sponsor of the effort.
