Suicide Girls

Alternative pin-up troupe the Suicide Girls will be bringing their Blackheart Burlesque tour in Denver this month, so we jumped at the chance for a quick chat with Sunny Suicide, aka Sunny Holiday, who will be MC-ing as well as dancing with the girls on the tour…A

The Suicide Girls’ Blackheart Burlesque Show is at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14 and Wednesday, October 15, at the Summit Music Hall; 1902 Blake St., Denver; $20-$25.

Yellow Scene: When did you join up with the Suicide Girls?

Sunny Suicide: I joined up with them in January this year. I saw that they were doing auditions, so I took everything I had and flew to LA.

YS: You’re not as tattooed as some of the other girls – what makes a Suicide Girl?

SS: What the Suicide Girls stand for is social suicide. It’s about just not caring about what society expects from you. The things that other people think makes somebody messed up, or out of the norm, that’s what we think makes us the most beautiful.

YS: You’ve said that burlesque is about female empowerment…

SS: Of course it’s about female empowerment. Especially here in the states, women are taught to be afraid of nudity and how inappropriate it is. Unless you’re a size two, you shouldn’t be walking around in a two-piece. I think that’s so disgraceful. I have a right to do what I want with my body. This is a form of art. Why are people so afraid of that?

YS: What can we expect from the show?

SS: What I love about this company is that we’re really encouraged to explore things that we like. A lot of Suicide Girls have the same interests as their fans, which is why we have the fan base that we have. There is such a thing as nerdy, hot girls.

YS: What are your plans going forward?

SS: I will always be Sunny Holiday. I’ll continue to do shows and I would love to start a burlesque school someday. I also love acting, singing and writing music. I’m living the dream, apparently.
