PRhyme is a hip-hop group featuring DJ Premier, and Detroit’s Royce da 5’9″. The guys are coming to Denver at the beginning of March, so we spoke with Premier. P

Yellow Scene: When did you guys meet, and start working together?

DJ Premier: We met in late 1998. I was turned onto his 12″, and I loved his freestyle work. A mutual friend asked if I was interested in making a record with Royce, and I absolutely was.

YS: How’s the tour going so far?

DJP: Great. We started in Baltimore, and played New York yesterday. So far, so good.

YS: Do you like playing Colorado?

DJP: I do. It’s never dull in Denver.

YS: What are your plans for the set?

DJP: We play a little bit of everything – some Royce classics, some Slaughterhouse stuff, and a medley of my own while Royce takes a break. We cover every aspect of hip-hop, and the crowd syncs to everything.

YS: When this tour’s done, what do you have planned for the rest of the year?

DJP: I have an independent label called Year Round Records, and I have a record dropping by a guy from Texas, my home town, called Khaleel. There will be a lot of stuff coming from my label. I’m a busy man.

PRhyme plays with Your Old Droog, Boldy James and SP Double at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 at the Bluebird Theater; 3317 E. Colfax Ave., Denver; 303-377-1666; $15-$20.
