Seligman Releases Open Letter Regarding Special Session to Hold the Governor Accountable

“The people of Colorado are not helpless, and neither is this legislature.”

Denver, CO – Today, David Seligman, candidate for Attorney General, released an open letter to the General Assembly, detailing the constitutional rationale for calling a special session in order to hold Governor Polis accountable for his recent actions.

What Seligman is calling for is unprecedented, and it will be difficult. But Seligman said, “We need to be done with the cynical politics that says we shouldn’t try hard things, and the performative politics that says accountability can only come in a strongly worded letter.” The American system of checks and balances only works if another branch of government acts when another has overstepped. The letter explains:

“At this point, Governor Polis has twice betrayed his constitutional obligation to faithfully administer Colorado’s laws and defend Colorado’s sovereignty from the Trump Administration’s efforts to harm our marginalized communities and hijack our election system . . . But what should not be on the table is nothing. The absence of accountability is not neutrality. It is permission for those in power to trample our rights, surrender our sovereignty, and face no consequence for doing so.

The failure to hold abuses of power accountable is precisely what has gotten us into the mess we are currently in. The people of Colorado are not helpless, and neither is this legislature. You are a co-equal branch of government, vested with the authority and the obligation to check an executive who has abandoned his oath. The people you represent are demanding accountability. It is your job to provide it.”
