Atlanta rapper Daye Jack plays Riot Fest at the end of August so we spoke to the man himself.A

Yellow Scene: When did you start singing and rapping, and taking it seriously?

Daye Jack: I started writing, rapping and singing when I was 13. It became serious when I started working on a tape. I wanted a big introduction, kind of a statement, that here’s what I’m doing. That was when I was like, yeah, this is it.

YS: Describe the sound…

DJ: My sound is very driven by emotion. It’s very personal. Sonically, I’m very into electronic music. My sound is very rap, and it’s keeping that and then bringing in elements of soul electronic things in, and bringing it all together.

YS: You’re from a suburb of Atlanta – what’s the scene like there?

DJ: I’m from Metro Atlanta, yeah. I was never in a scene out there. There wasn’t really that sort of thing. What there was, was time for me to spend with friends and learn the things that I liked musically, and learn about myself. I had time for myself out there because it’s so spread out and mellow.

YS: What can we expect from your set?

DJ: You’re gonna be hearing so much and feeling it. A lot of the electronic-heavy things will really shock people.

YS: When Riot Fest is done, what’s next?

DJ: Working on new music, and doing some shows.

Daye Jack plays Denver Riot Fest; August 28-30; riotfest.org/denver. The event just added a second wave of bands, featuring System of a Down, the Prodigy, 88 Fingers Louie, Chef’Special, and Input&Broken.
