During the Ferguson trial, the social media buzz kept growing. Twitter became a medium where citizens could voice their First Amendment Rights of free speech. Many Twitter users have been able to help educate and update citizens on breaking news such as the Ferguson trial.D

The Twitter buzz was fueled by protestors and angry citizens wanting to voice their opinions of the trial and the happenings throughout the Ferguson case. Three activists were actually able to use Twitter to voice their opinions and fund their way to Missouri to protest the trials.

Johnetta Elzie, DeRay McKesson, and Zellie Imani had all read the many of the posts on Twitter about the trail after the shooting in Ferguson.

After reading about the occurrence Elzie began tweeting and drove to Ferguson. She now has more than 57,000 followers on Twitter.

Mr. Mckesson had scrolled through Twitter during the August protests. He then became a full-time protestor and reports on the happenings of trial to keep up other followers up to date on whats happening. He now has 200,000 followers.

The 30-year-old math teach Mr. Imani made a GoFundMe account trying to raise money to fly out to Missouri and protest the trail. Since 2014 when he first made the account he has been to Ferguson five times, with three of them being financed by crowd funding. He now has 50,000 Twitter followers and has been helping to organize NJShutitdown, which is a group that protests police brutality in New Jersey.

Mazen Darwish was finally released after spending more than three years in Prison. Darkish is a leading journalist and rights activist but was arrested January 2012 for “promoting terrorist acts”.M

Darwish has received multiple awards in the past for his work and has also won a UNESCO’s annual press freedom prize. His wife, Yara Bader accepted the award on his behalf though.

Darwish was punished for expressing his opinion, and even though himself and his two colleagues Hussein Ghreir and Hani al-Zaitani called the media rights group multiple times they were still arrested. Mazen’s wife has said that he has “already forgiven those who tortured him almost to death.”

Right now around 200,000 people are held in the Syrian government detention centers, prisons and security facilities, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor. Last year though President Bashar al-Assad signed an amnesty to hopefully help free thousands of political prisoners but activists are now saying only a few hundred have actually been freed.

A verdict in the second step of the James Holmes trial will be announced this afternoon.A

After the sentencing of the death penalty, the jury of nine women and three men will begin the second part of the sentencing for the Holmes murder case.

Today, it will be decided whether the trial will end with a life sentencing for Holmes or if it will move forward to the third and last step of the sentencing.

In order for the death sentence to be decided upon during a trial, the jurors must meet three times to decide whether the defendant should be sentenced to death or not.

The trial began in April of 2014. Just last month, jurors decided if the case was terrible enough to warrant the death penalty, then they began to hear about Holmes’ life to decide if his mental illnesses caused him to kill 12 people in a movie theatre. Today, they will decide whether or not the crime was enough for him to be acquitted of the death penalty or found guilty.

Finding Holmes guilty on four of the five charges and not guilty on intentionally killing a child under the age of 12.

UPDATE: Now that the trial has finished for the day the jurors have decided that Holmes life is not worth the murder of 12 innocent people. This means that they will now move to the third trial, and all of the family and friends of the people who were murdered will now testify.

After this last step the jurors will decide if James Holmes will face the death penalty.

After laughing at the Meagan skit, endlessly watching their impression of a college football draft, and quoting the pizza order episode, the hilarious Key and Peele will come to an end on Comedy Central.A

Key and Peele have appealed to a wide audience for five seasons now. The last season will begin this fall and then the stars will have the chance to “explore other things.”

Loving this show for the past five seasons, it is sad that it’s coming to an end. Both of these comedians are so funny, the will definitely be other skits and movies but not being able to watch them together will be a sad change.

Key and Peele have both been nominated for numerous Emmy awards. They also won a Peabody award back in 2013.

It does make sense though that after five seasons they would want to pursue other routes and see where their acting and comedy careers will travel.

Soon new episodes of tear jerking stand up will no longer be available of the two comedians but it will always be possible to watch reruns of their Obama impressions.

After a long fun weekend, crawling out of bed Monday morning and motivating yourself to start you day may seem impossible. Forbes posted a few tips, 11 to be exact of ways to beat “the Monday Blues.”A

Here are a few of my own tips to help beat the so called “Monday Blues” and make the best of the long Monday work day.

First, prepare the night before for everything you have to do Monday. Nobody wants to force themselves awake early Monday knowing they have a dozen things to do before they even leave for work. So help yourself out by doing some of them beforehand when you are tired and caffeine deprived.

Second, make sure you either make yourself a good breakfast to not only start your metabolism but also make your body happy with tasty food and coffee of course. Even if you don’t cook, stopping by Moe’s bagel on your way out may be the best breakfast decision you have ever made.

Third, try to listen to happy and up beat music while working. You do not want to become depressed sitting in an office all day when its beautiful out, so stay focused and listen to fun music to remind you how much fun you had dancing with your friends just two night prior.

Fourth, make sure that you to stay social throughout the day. Do not seclude yourself at your desk under a stack of papers. You will just become over whelmed and stressed out. Try to catch up with any of your co-workers and see if they have any fun plans coming up and invite them to your next movie night or whatever it may be. Planning something fun will help you to get through the weekend knowing fun nights are heading your way.

Lastly, go home from work and go to the gym for at least an hour. Even if you are exhausted you will not regret it. It will not only help you burn off some of those office cup cakes but will boost your energy and endorphins making you happy and glad you finally made it through the day. Then you can go home and drink a nice cold beer and have a delicious dinner or even some take out Chinese.

Sunday night began the last of the three-night Global Dance Festival. Only able to attend one night, we arrived into the lower south parking lot around 5 p.m. Surrounded by people in various tie-dye colors, drinking and playing music out of their cars, we joined in and met many new friends.S

After talking in the parking lot for a little while, we headed down the road which wrapped up and around the beautiful Red Rocks of the famous amphitheater.

After a hike up the entrance we made our way to the bottom of the steep steps. After crawling up the steps for another few minutes and making it past security and through the gates, we were finally in the middle of the massive amphitheater.

Thousands of people lined the steps of the amphitheater, making their way to the best rows that had enough dancing room. Many DJs began the night before Benni Benassi came on to play his set at 9 p.m.

Beginning the show, some of DJs played harder EDM music than others. With bass that seemed so low it caused the whole amphitheater to rumble, while others remixed popular new songs and made them their own with new beats. Each DJ had their own style, that every audience member was able to enjoy and dance to.

Following right after was the headliner Tiesto. The audience cheered as he finally made his way out after 10 p.m. and began to play. Colored lasers streamed through the air, projecting into the sky and lighting up the rocks. People held glow sticks, and bright neon balloons as they danced with friends.

After spending almost seven hours at Red Rocks, we were exhausted, and pushed out through the crowds and back towards our car ready to go home and sleep.

It was a great night, and definitely worth the money. Making it through one night was more than enough. Dancing for so many hours was so exhausting but the weather held out and it did not rain, and being in such a beautiful amphitheater having fun with friends made it all worth it.

Beginning promptly at 12 p.m. or even earlier, if the daily stress and phone calls at Yellow Scene begin to get too much, we begin our daily walk around the quaint town of Erie.B

Beginning in mid-May as a staff writer for the travel section of Yellow Scene, the walks began as chilly and brisk, as summer did not come to Colorado until early June this year.

Learning of these daily walks from the editors at the magazine, and knowing it would be “weird” to not walk, I knew I had to give it a try.

Walking every day to take a break from being in the office from 9-5, we sometimes frolic through the grass-covered park with one of the magazine designer’s dog, a three year-old little shitzu called Panda.

Not only is this daily walk a great way to take a break from sitting under the bright florescent lights, while staring at our even brighter computer screens but it also provides great health benefits.

Did you know that, according to Healthy Lifestyle Fitness, a regular walk can help one maintain a healthy weight, prevent or help manage heart disease, strengthen bones, lift your mood, and improve your balance.

Knowing that these walks are a great way to take a break from the crowded office and get to know my co-workers that I have spent the summer with, it helped even more knowing about the physical health benefits behind walking.

Coming mid-August will begin my last few days at the magazine. I know, no matter how hot it gets in Colorado this summer, I will miss these magazine walks.

Going out on the weekend in Denver is never dull while under the bright, florescent city lights that over hang over Larimer Square. Various adventures await for one looking for the party, bar, or club scene on a late night downtown.G

Beginning the night either in lower downtown, up by Capitol hill, or all over the Denver area, one may easily find various fun activities.

Starting the night at a friends apartment in Capitol Hill for a birthday party on Friday was a good way to see a different part of the city that may be overlooked.

Next, we left the apartment and headed downtown to Howl of The Moon, a bar on 19th street. It’s a very different bar than the usual downtown bars such as the Tavern, Jackson’s, and View House.

All of these bars have the option of roof top dance floors. While Jackson’s offers a five dollar all-you-can-drink on Saturdays for girls, and Tavern always has free cover for girls.

Howl of The Moon was a good change from the usual bars, playing not only main stream hip hop and pop, but also 1990’s throw backs like Britney Spears, Howl of The Moon had good drinks and fun music. Having a bigger dance floor than some other bars, Howl of The Moon had a lot of space, and was not over crowded as many bars are for someone wanting to dance with friends.

Saturday night did not hold any drink specials such as three dollar well drinks or all you can drink for girls, but it was still good to check out a new bar. Of course, ordering Vegas Bombs is never cheap, so if you are on a budget definitely research to check out the bars without a cover, or with the unlimited drinks for girls.

Going down the steps to the dance floor at Howl of Moon, a live band performed on the stage. With instruments and a signer, this bar was different from any of the others in Denver. Downtown, many bars have DJs that spin music on stage but nothing is as good as having a live band which is what made this band unique.

Next time you and friends are looking for a fun night out, definitely try different bars than your usual spots. Howl of the Moon was something new and it was definitely an entertaining place to check out.

Not only is Boulder home to some of the most beautiful biking and running trails, but it also has some of the most beautiful mountains and areas for hiking.N

Leaving the beautiful Flat Irons, and traveling down highway 6, you will follow a scenic winding road up into the mountains of Eldorado Springs.

When you park at the national forest, many back packers may pass you as they make their trek up the dirt road to where they are going to rock climb. You may also pass a family with a dog or two trail hiking and pick nicking between the trees of the forest.

On a nice sunny day these trails are the perfect escape form the usual Boulder hikes and offer various trails to explore and test out.

Near the park visitors even come to set up tents and camp out. During the summer, the crowds grow on the weekends. Tourists hear about the beautiful park close to Boulder and want to check it out.

Heading out to conquer the steep hills, that lead up to the rocky ridges where climbers scale the wall, it is best to try this new adventure on week days or during the colder months when parking isn’t tight and you can enjoy the view of wild flower covered hills without numerous others blocking the view.

Every summer Red Rocks hosts a variety of shows and concerts, giving the front range a little bit of everything. Coming next month to Morrison is a three-day music festival, Global Dance, with DJs such as Tiesto, Kaskade, Flosstradmaus, Above and Beyond, Benny Benassi, and Datsik. Along with those artists come many more to open and perform with them.E

Global Dance has been a successful event for more than 20 years, bringing together both Colorado natives and visitors from all over the world to Red Rocks. The show is not only an incredible display of talented DJs but bombards the visitors with lights and lasers that stream across the stage and out into the audience.

Until yesterday afternoon, Global Dance was only available as a three-day pass. Of course it would be amazing to see all three days with so many great DJs but some of us don’t have the stamina for three days of lasers, dancing and sunshine. Luckily, customers can now buy a day pass and still see an amazing show. Check out the lineup and decide for yourself if you’ll choose one day, or go all three. Just remember the sunscreen.

Check out the day-to-day lineup here.

Coming this weekend to Denver is the Cirque du Soleil performing Cirque Kurios. Bringing in a whole new show, Cirque du Soleil found inspiration for their new show through the late 19th century.C

Introducing their 35th production, the Cirque performs using inspiration from rail roads and new travel methods that stemmed from the late 19th century. During the 19th century, the industrial revelation begin to grow, changing the world forever. This amazing era is what Cirque du Soleil hopes to mirror through their performance at the Pepsi center.

Performing dangerous and jaw dropping stunts, the performers create their own original stunts to perform on tour.

This show will actually be directed by Cirque veteran Michel Laprise who has worked with Madonna, helping her before the performance at the Super Bowl in 2012.

The first night of the show was June 12 and will have booking until July 26 so there is plenty of time to go see it! The show lasts about two hours and 10 minutes with the 25 minute intermissions. Ticket prices range from around 70 dollars to over 100.

When thinking of the beautiful city of Boulder one may picture the amazing flat irons, or vision the red brick building of the CU campus. The town is not only known for its breath taking views but for also being a community focused on healthy living. This means hiking, biking, running, and eating well.W

Bringing even more healthy eating options to Boulder is the Wonder and the Juice Girls juice bar. The grand opening of Wonder and the Juice Girls June 17, down on Pearl street where Wok Eat space was once, many have been invited to come taste the freshly squeezed Wonder juice.

Filled with 100 percent locally-grown vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and herbs, Wonder would be a great place to try if you are looking for a new fresh taste whether it be sweet or tangy, Wonder has many options to satisfy every juice craving.

Attending the R.S.V.P pre-opening of the juice bar yesterday, it was definitely an unusual surprise to see goats in an encaged surrounding outside of the juice bar.

Meeting the three owners of the shop, Brooke Jordan, Robyne Known, and Cecily Runge they explained what the goats meant as well as how they came up with the idea to open the Juice bar in Boulder.

“We are all middle school friends and grew up in Boulder Colorado. We decided to come back from where we all were in the country and start Wonder Press which we are really really excited about. Our juices are hand crafted all organic. We have a lot of vegetable juices, we’ve got green juices, lemonades, and nut milks as well, and we will also be serving smoothies and little bite sized foods as well.”

After creating these home grown smoothies, the girls will have the left over pulp taken out to a farm where the goats reside for them to eat. Hoping to help cut back on waste and garbage. The juices come in glass jars, which the girls hope everyone will bring in to be washed in their low energy using dish washer so that they can be refilled again with more delicious juice.

The actual juice bar does not open for another few weeks but when it does it will definitely be a new Boulder hot spot. If anyone is looking for a new delicious smoothie not filled with with sherbet and other sugary products or an amazing energy producing drink, Wonder Juice is definitely a place to check out.

So the new Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World, was released on June 12, and in that time I have already seen it twice. Being a huge Jurassic Park fan, I had planned months ahead of time to see the movie opening night. Having watched many horror movies, I always prepare to be disappointed, and usually am. However, with a classic movie like Jurassic Park, I did not think I would be upset, and I definitely wasn’t.S

I love Chris Pratt, who plays one of the main characters, and I thought did a really good job and also thought the story line and plot was creative and entertaining. Nothing will ever beat the original but this new movie was pretty close.

The second time I saw it, I took one of my friends who is also a Jurassic Park lover. We went to the Cinebarre movie theatre in Louisville which I had never been to before and this was probably one of the coolest theaters. I mean, it was a little insane because you seriously sit down in a comfy leather chair connected to a table with a menu placed on top. Workers come around to take your beer or cocktail orders, and next your appetizers, pop corn, or dinner orders.

This may seem a little over the top, but it really was. I mean it is great if you can afford six dollars for a package of candy. Still, it was fun to see the waiters and waitresses ducking through crowds, as dinosaurs battled just to bring audience members a beer and burger.

If you haven’t been seen the new Jurassic World and are a fan of the originals, or just want a fun, action-packed movie to see I would definitely recommend going. If you are also wanting a drink and some dinner as well, it would be a good option to try out Cinnebarre. I was late to the movie so I did not get to try ordering any of the delicious looking mozzarella sticks, but next time I think I will definitely try it out. Instead of dinner and a movie, why not having dinner with a movie?

This fall will be my senior year at CU Boulder and I could not be more excited, or more terrified. I’m ecstatic to be done with school forever. But forever is a long time, and a lot can change. Who knows if I will even land a job after the long walk across the stage? T

Right now though, I’m excited. I’ve pushed graduation to the back of my mind and I’m focusing on to be starting my final year abroad in Europe. Leaving in August to study in France, most of my time has been spent preparing for the big Euro trip. Most of it though is more stressful and tedious than it’s worth.

First, France has agreements with Colorado that I have to get my long stay Visa in Los Angeles. I am not permitted to mail order it. I have to fly there. But before flying out I have to have two passport sized pictures taken, see a doctor, mail a 100 dollar money order, copy my license and passport and print my acceptance. There’s more, but I won’t bore you.

If anyone is ever thinking about studying or living abroad, just know all of the madness that comes with having to get a Visa to live their for over a sixth month period. I have one friend who went to China and was able to do all of her Visa paper work through mail. I wish that was the case for me, but of course nothing can be simple in my life.

So even though I will be in LA at 11:15 a.m. on July 1 to get my Visa, that means I am one step closer to moving to France for a semester and beginning to achieve my goal of being a world traveller. For now, I am still a college student and I am not ready to give that up. When I come home I will prepare to face real adult problems but for now I am going to have fun in France.

When you first move out and go away to college, if you do not plan to live with a friend, you are assigned the dreaded random roommate. Maybe you’ve heard horror stories from friends or older relatives. Maybe Hollywood ruined the ideal roommate situation with the film The Roommate, which focuses on a woman who moves into a dorm and befriends her roommate who ends up being a crazy stalker. From ripping out a girls belly button rings and killing an adorable cat, this girl is insane enough to give anyone roommate nightmares. W

When I moved away to college, the roommate fear was there but there were so many other things to be stressed about. I let it slip to the back of my mind. But living with the same roommate for the past two years, I have realized that I am living with a crazy roommate.

It started with her thinking I poisoned her old cat (that really had tumors), escalated to her kicking my friends out during parties, and now she has pushed me too far. Moving into our second place this year started off with her yelling at me for changing the showerhead in the bathroom, scraping her cooking pan and not cleaning the bathroom.

I have lost my mind trying to remember sane living with her.

Even when I wasn’t home during summer, I got rude texts and continue to get them even though my busy schedule keeps me from being home majority of the time.

So how have I dealt with it for this long you ask?

I’ve argued with her about the chores. I’ve explained that I most definitely did not kill her cat. Maybe she has seen The Roommate too many times. Most recently the fights have been about her putting cleaner in the toilet which her new cat drinks out of, and I forget to shut the lid of the toilet and she thinks her cat will be poisoned and die. So she started posting notes around the entire bathroom. Each blue note was written in all caps saying “PUT SEAT DOWN!!!” Notice the multitude of exclamation marks, as if the caps were not enough.

Having a lot on my mind lately, I have still forgotten to close it and she has sent me multiple texts while working. I just don’t reply to them. Yesterday, it was saying to just shut the bathroom door since I can’t remember to shut the seat.

Living with a girl for the first time has taught me a lot. Mostly, that they are totally and completely insane, well at least mine is. I have tried to make her happy by bringing her pizzas from work, and getting her get well cards after her recent shoulder surgery, but nothing is good enough.

Maybe if I was a guy? Before her recent break up with her boy friend who I secretly named “tinder man” she was actually nice and fun, but now it’s back to normal pycho roommate.

The best advice I could offer to anyone dealing with this would be, GET OUT!!! (See what I did there?) Seriously, as much as you try or spread your amazing positive attitude as I have tried to do, haters will always hate and no one needs that in their lives. I have recently learned two things: you can’t ever make everyone happy, and the myth of the crazy roommate is not just a myth.

For the past few years, people have sat in long drive through lines every morning before work waiting to get their over priced coffee from Starbucks. Starbucks has grown to be a huge and commonly-known coffee shop, on every side street, at every strip mall, and sitting at the end of every block of at least every other street. So why is it that I think Dunkin’ Donuts is so much better?F

I mean, I have the same ridiculous addiction. Sitting in long drive throughs every morning waiting for a rude girl to take my order and then forget that I also ordered water with coffee and become even ruder when I ask for water as well, and then pay for my (less expensive) but still costly extra large hot coffee.

My addiction to caffeine started when I was in 5th grade and my mom started giving me coffee in the morning to help me wake up. It has now grown into at least three cups a day, with at least one of those being from Dunkin’.

Personally, I think the brew from Dunkin’ is so much better than the brew at Starbucks, and I do not care to waste 1000 calories on a frappachino or latte when I can be wasting them on Mexican food or something actually worth my time.

I would really like to know what is so addicting about both of these coffee shops though. What are they putting their coffee that keeps thousands of people wasting minutes of their life waiting in a drive through?

So I decided to do some research on my addiction to coffee to see why me and so many others partake in this daily caffeine routine. The U.S. health department did a study in Salt Lake City comparing the demand for Starbucks v.s. crack and found out that “According to the Salt Lake City Police Department’s records, crack is turning an estimated profit of $600,000 per year. Starbucks however is a billion dollar industry in Salt Lake City.”

As sad as it is I feel like it would only make a few people realize how much money and how many calories they are wasting on this. I get a daily coffee from Dunkin’ which coasts me about $2.61, which is $18.27 a week, or $80.91 a month or even more, $952.65 a year. I have actually never calculated that before and that is an insane amount of money for a college student to be spending on anything let alone a cup of coffee.

Even though that is a crazy high number, I already know it might only be enough to slow my Dunk n consumption for maybe a few days if that. I am not exactly sure what they put in this magical coffee that makes it taste so much better than the bag I buy from the store or even than Starbucks which so many other people prefer. I do know I am not alone on my daily caffeine binge, and along with thousands of others face.

Maybe there should be a caffeine addiction rehab like they have for crack. The question is though, would I even go if there was? I would probably show up with a my extra large coffee with cream and sugar and pretend like attempt to give up something I can barely get out of bed without.

After being at my first internship for a few weeks, I have been enjoying having my own desk in an office like setting, but suddenly while driving home last night shamefully regretting the fudge brownie I had just devoured, I was contemplating when I would have time to run, lift or go to kick-boxing next. Then I realized “I can work out while sitting at work!”A

So I pulled in the unusually empty parking last night and parked my car under the florescent red glow of the Target sign.

Walking in I was on a mission to get the rather small work out section part of the store. Usually in Boulder, every store has an expansive health food and work out section because Boulder is home to some of the fittest people in the world.

It didn’t matter though because Target is cheap and they had exactly what I needed: a yoga ball.

In every comedy/ chick flick movie it is common to see that health conscious person (usually a girl) sitting on not a squishy rolly chair but a yoga ball. So I decided to fit the stereotype and get one of my own. Buying the biggest one at 75 cm, I sat at work this morning slowly pumping up the giant grey ball with the manual pump that came in the box.

After about half an hour, my arm grew tired so I switched to my left arm to make sure both arms got an equal work out. FINALLY! It was inflated enough to sit on! One of my editors rolled the chair out of my way, and I bounced into my desk on my new ab ball.

The only reason I have remotely OK posture is because I grew having to sit straight playing the piano and horse back riding, so not ending the day with a lower back ache would be an unimaginable pain to not have.

Reading online about why these balls have become popular makes me even happier that I got one. Summer isn’t just coming, it’s actually here, and if I don’t have time for crunches I may as well roll around the office working on strengthening my core while blogging this.

Yoga balls are helpful to improve stability and balance, which I have neither of. Sitting on this ball I am catching my balance about every 30 seconds. I can barely walk without kicking a desk or tripping over my other foot. So maybe this ball with help ball will help me break less toes? The ball also helps with strengthening of abs which then helps improve my lower back muscles which are both bonuses in my eyes.

Browsing though various online sites though, many wrote about the dangers that come along with using the exercise ball. Including: the pressure it puts on your back when used at a ling period of time, hurting your spinal column, and straining ligaments.

After reading this it as a little concerning but eh I might as well try it. One website had interesting work outs to try while sitting on the ball so I think I will attempt some and see if I can get any core burn going. If not, it was worth the try, and I will swivel back around in my chair.

Right now, I’m having fun trying not to roll off of my giant ball that I’m sure everyone thinks is a little ridiculous but if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be me.

Two types of people exist: those who tan and those who cannot. Or more specifically, those that are afraid of the consequences that can result from tanning either in the sun or by using a tanning bed or the people caking their bodies in baby oil, wanting to leave the pool with visible tan lines.T

Now with the sun finally shinning in Boulder, I am excited to say I will be laying out at the Buff pool on the CU campus during my days off. I do know the dangers of laying by the pool for too long on a bright summer day, and I do know the harmful results that I may have faced being in denial of what I was doing to my skin while laying under the bright UV rays during my last two high school years.

One of the most obvious worries that comes from spending too much time in the intense Colorado sun that hits even harder at the high altitude we are at, is of course cancer. Having both blonde hair and blue eyes, I have am pretty fair, so it is important to put on a lot of sun screen. It is embarrassing to say now that, not only was I laying in a level one tanning bed for 13 minutes a day, but I was also coating my skin with baby oil before partaking in my daily 9-5 pool routine.

Making sure one gets the right amount of sun, while using a protective lotion containing at least an SPF of 30, the sun can have positive effects. Not only does vitamin D help with maintaining bone health, it can prevent heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate and colon.

The sun provides these benefits and many more, but the sun does have a dark side. Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Three types of skin cancer exist: basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. So even though many benefits exist from basking in the sun, it should not be made your summer day job.

A few tips to stay safe but still get tan in the summer are: Spend shorter amounts of time in the sun on a daily basis (around 30 minutes a day), use sun screen when you are going to be exposed at longer periods of time, make sure to always protect your eyes with sun glasses, and even ask your doctor how much vitamin D he or she thinks is right for your skin to be getting.

Trust me, laying out under the burning sun feeling my sun getting darker with every passing minute is probably one of my top summer hobbies, but I also understand the huge risks of cancer, and I do not want to harm my skin and expose it to pre-aging. I now make sure to put on SPF 55 instead of coconut tanning oil, and I leave the sun before I turn into a lobster, but yes I still get a tan in the summer.

Last Sunday, I attended the 37th annual Bolder Boulder 10k race for the fourth consecutive year. Beginning around 7 am, the race had around 30 different waves because of all of the thousands of people running it.L

Each year the race is packed with two types of people: some dress in all Nike attire ready to beat the running time they received from their previous races, or the second type, who is someone wearing a tutu with red white and blue proudly symbolizing America because the race is always held on Memorial Day.

Regardless of how serious the competitors are, each came out to have a good time, to support their team mates, and to run!

Every year, I look forward to running this race because they always do so much with it to make it fun. While running through Boulder neighborhoods people stand outside with hoses ready to spray you and help you cool down from over heating. Some hand out marsh mellows, gateraide and other sugar filled snacks to give you a buzz in order to finish the race.

On certain streets slip and slides are set up for people willing to take a break and glide through before reaching the end of the race. Entertainment is always set up. Awaiting runners are bands trying to motivate them by playing various genres of music or even dancing through the streets.

At the end of the race you run through the CU Boulder stadium and circle through inside where you are given goody bags with snack, chocolate milk and the optional beer for any one of age.

For me the race is not just something I look forward to every year in order to push myself to receive a better time than the years previous but it is also fun to be able to dress up with my brother and look at all of the other people that share our excitement and love of running.

Lately, in Colorado, something strange has been happening regarding the weather. Colorado, which is reputable for having over 300 sunny days a year, has seen nothing but cloudy skies off-and-on for almost the past month. Rain fell down over the north metro area all of Tuesday. Even today, the skies are looming with a dark dim grey color.L

With May coming to an end, the weather is not only damp and depressing but it is making it hard for the usual outdoor activities many Coloradans, and myself, participate in.

Loving to run, this weather has made it difficult to find the motivation to get out of bed, let alone go for a run when the rain is at a constant downpour. Attempting to hike in Fort Collins last week, my shoes are still coated in mud and I was forced to stay off one of my favorite running trails in order not to sink into what was once a path and has now become mud like quick sand.

Areas of higher elevation are being hit even harder by this cold front. According to the Denver Post, areas such as: Breckenridge, Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes, Winter Park, and Mount Evans, are all expected to receive around 20 inches of snow.

Before leaving to study abroad in Southern France this fall, one of my many travel/adventure goals is to hike as many 14ers as I can, but with chilly weather making it impossible for the snow to melt and then bringing in even more snow, I don’t know when I will be able to make it up to the mountains to hike and camp.

Hoping that the weather clears up soon, I am staying optimistic. So far this morning it hasn’t rained so maybe by tomorrow I will be able to get in a nice run, and then maybe in the coming weeks I will be able to tan at the pool that opened up almost a month ago, hike, and camp.

On the bright side of this dreary day, the rivers will be high which means it will be a great summer for water rafting.
