The Signature Event From Art Students League of Denver Acts as a Platform for Emerging and Established Artists From Across the State.

DENVER – July 8, 2026 – Now in its 33rd year, the Summer Art Market from Art Students League of Denver (ASLD) features nearly 200 Colorado artists working across a range of mediums, including painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture, fiber art, metalsmithing and more. The event provides an opportunity for up-and-coming and early-career artists to exhibit and sell their work directly to the public, alongside more established artists: many participants are first-time sellers, while others return annually, and all works are original.

For emerging artists like Red Castro, who has been taking classes at Art Students League since January, the market provides a valuable launching point for what may eventually become a full-time career.

“I’m really looking forward to being around all the other artists, and being surrounded by people who love creation and appreciate beauty, “ Castro said. “As a beginner, I view the Summer Art Market as my first look into what ‘could be.’ This is a foray, a beginning, into the future life I see for myself and a realization of my potential.”

Known for its friendly and down-to-earth atmosphere, the Summer Art Market fosters relationships between artists, enthusiasts and collectors from across the state. A variety of mediums, works, styles and price points make the event accessible for newcomers and a favorite destination for longtime art lovers and curators. It is also an opportunity for artists to strengthen bonds and gain insight from within their own community.

“The Summer Art Market brings people together in a hands-on, face-to-face way,” said ASLD Executive Director Rachel Basye. “Each artist may be taking individual classes or working in their personal studio, but when everyone is here together at the market, it’s fun to feel that communal atmosphere; connecting not only with collectors and neighbors but also with other artists.”

The market takes place this August 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day between E. 1st Ave., Sherman St., E. 4th Ave. and Logan St. In addition to artist booths, the event includes a hands-on KidArt area, as well as food and drink vendors.

Art Students League of Denver is a Denver-based nonprofit empowering people to experience the joy of art in their own way since 1987. Ticket sales from the Summer Art Market support its year-round programming, including classes and workshops, rotating art exhibits, artist residency programs, community engagement, summer camps and more. LITTLETON, CO — Each summer, with the same anticipatory energy usually found outside a concert venue, a line of people gathers on the campus of Arapahoe Community College (ACC). The crowd isn’t waiting to get the best seats for their favorite musician—these fans are there for the first chance at acquiring artwork by their favorite fine artist—some worth thousands of dollars—for $150 or less. The Affordable Arts Festival, back for its 15th year, happens one day only, Sunday, August 30, 2026, 9-3 p.m. at ACC, 5900 S Santa Fe Dr, Littleton, Colorado, 80120. Admission is $12, and tickets are on sale now on the website and will be available at the entrance. Plenty of free parking with RTD and light rail stops also nearby.

While the word affordable is not always equated with high-end fine art by well-known artists, this show breaks that mold and provides a unique opportunity to acquire sought-after pieces by over 160 artists at highly discounted prices. The works include both large and small, 3-D and 2-D, prints and originals, jewelry, glass art, fiber, leather, wood, photography, paintings and more, all created by professionals. Constantly ranked as one of the top five art shows in the country, it draws artist vendors from both Colorado and across the United States.

The festival is set up like a typical art fair, with well-designed booths showcasing artists’ work. The difference is the palpable excitement it generates for new attendees and seasoned art lovers as they vie for works by their favorite creators or discover new styles and genres at budget prices. The pricing allows art lovers to fill a home, refresh a space or fulfill gift lists.

The festival was founded by photographer Jim DeLutes, who still enthusiastically owns and operates it. “I invite those who have yet to attend or are new to the Denver metro area to join the fun,” says DeLutes. “It’s a delight to watch people connect with fine art and discover that they can actually afford to acquire it! Despite the budget pricing, we truly do offer highly desirable work by career artists.”

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection. The line-up starts at 5 a.m. and the gates open at 9 a.m. Vendors will be on site early selling coffee and pastries. Once inside, shoppers should snap up favorite pieces immediately, but stay until at least 11 a.m., when the artists will bring out a fresh selection of deals. Later arrivals will still have a chance to discover deals with the thousands of pieces on offer.

The website features a full list of participating artists and outlines the many conveniences in place to help transport purchases and make the day go smoothly. Moreover, proceeds from the admission price are donated directly to our host partner, the ACC Foundation. This donation is then matched by the Colorado Opportunity Initiative. These funds go towards scholarships for ACC students. To date, the festival has donated $360,000 to help change the lives of these students.

MUSEUM OF ART | FORT COLLINS OPENS A CELEBRATION OF COLORADO AND PATRICK DUNFORD EXHIBITIONS

FORT COLLINS —On Friday, June 26, through September 13, MUSEUM OF ART | FORT COLLINS will open the following exhibitions to the public: A Celebration of Colorado and On the Plains by Patrick Dunford. The Celebration of Colorado exhibition is juried by artists living and working in Larimer and Weld Counties in Northern Colorado. Artwork media include woodwork, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, painting, fiber art, drawing, and multi-media artwork.

Juror Beth Venn reviewed 780 images and applications from 184 artists to narrow down the exhibition to 65 artists and 103 artworks. Beth Venn is currently the Executive Director of the Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts, University of Wyoming. Before she became executive director of the Neltje Center, Venn served as the founding executive director of KinoSaito, a multidisciplinary art center and artist residency program in the lower Hudson Valley in New York.

She has held curatorial positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Newark Museum. Venn has consulted for museums, performing arts centers, and public libraries on strategic planning and program development, and she advises community-based arts nonprofits. She also serves on the board of the Wyoming Arts Alliance. A native of northern Illinois, she received her bachelor’s degree in art history at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. After relocating to the Northeast, Venn completed a master’s degree in art history at the University of Delaware.

“We are so pleased to host an exhibition of such creative talent from artists all across Northern Colorado and celebrate the breadth of creativity in our community,” says Lisa Hatchadoorian, Executive Director.

After moving with his family to Moorhead, Minnesota, a year and a half ago, Patrick Dunford found himself returning to the Great Plains region of the Red River Valley after eleven years away. Upon returning to the Plains — or the Prairies, as they are known in Canada — Dunford became newly captivated by the region’s vast expanses. Frequent travel between Moorhead and Winnipeg led Dunford to observe the agricultural structures, grain hopper railcars, and open spaces lining the highways of this fertile landscape.

He became especially interested in the grain elevators and sugar beet factories scattered throughout the region. Dunford began documenting these spaces through small drawings and photographs made on site, later bringing them back to the studio as source material for his oil paintings. Over time, his focus has shifted away from majestic or conventionally picturesque scenery toward overlooked and everyday spaces such as rail yards, roadside attractions, signage, and agricultural factories.

Patrick Dunford was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, and completed his MFA at Concordia University in Montreal.

This exhibition is curated by Dinghy Rig, a collaborative artist-run art production and exhibition program launched by Aitor Lajarin-Encina and Marius Lehene. This exhibition is the seventh installment of a long-term collaboration with the Museum of Art | Fort Collins, which is hosting the Dinghy Rig shows in what used to be the building’s safety vault room. The project benefits from the generous support of Peter D. Springberg, MD.

FORT GARLAND, CO & TAOS, NM — June 11, 2026 — An ambitious and sprawling cross-border exhibition exploring the art of adobe is opening at History Colorado’s Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center in the San Luis Valley and the Harwood Museum of Art in the high-desert of Taos, New Mexico. Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros is a sprawling immersive exhibition exploring adobe as a living practice that connects art, architecture, and ancestral knowledge across the southwestern United States.

Through unique adobe installations at History Colorado’s Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center and the Harwood Museum of Art, artists show how adobe endures not through permanence but through renewal – its survival bound to the annual acts of maintenance, ceremony, and reciprocity that give it life. Unearthing Futures brings together some of the most significant artists working with earthen architecture and land-based practice today.

Creations by artists Ronald Rael, Santino Gonzales, and Joanna Keane Lopez are featured at the Fort Garland Museum, while works by those artists, in addition to Gabriel Chaile, Rafa Esparza, and Christine Howard Sandoval, are on display at the Harwood Museum of Art. These installations examine how earth, water, and fiber, shaped by hand and sustained through communal care, embody both tradition and transformation.

Designer Ronald Rael is building a Fort Garland-specific installation of Casa Desenterrada/Exhuming Home, previously shown at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. The installation fills a large black wooden structure with adobe bricks, each unique.

Some are painted with the names of Indigenous captives listed in an 1865 census or embedded with images or small objects, including items from an abandoned adobe home in the San Luis Valley town of Conejos, which Rael rescued from the threat of demolition in 2018. The adobe home once served as the office of the first Lieutenant Governor of Colorado and the headquarters of the Ute Indian Agency.

Santino Gonzales is creating Skyharp, an installation turning the Commandant’s Quarters, one of the original adobe buildings at Fort Garland, into an aeolian harp – an instrument activated by the wind. Gonzales is also crafting The Disc at Fort Garland (for Nana), an outdoor earth sound mirror inspired by New Mexico’s Very Large Array and the Sound Mirrors employed by the British military as pre-radar tools to detect distant aircraft.

This adobe sound mirror invites opportunities for deep, quantum listening, turning the attention of visitors towards the landscape and the sky. Joanna Keane Lopez is creating A Raven Croaked like a Witch from a Dead Pine, a film projected onto a mud-plastered wall that traces the lived experience of the southwestern landscape where ranching, myth, and memory coexist with the ongoing presence of military occupation.

“Unearthing Futures aptly bridges the borderlands of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico as it also builds connections between past/future, earth/sky, humanity/technology, and our ancestors/our descendants,” said History Colorado President/CEO and State Historic Preservation Officer Dawn DiPrince. “History Colorado is honored to collaborate with the Harwood Museum of Art on this place-based exhibition that uses the land to remind us where we are rooted.”

Unearthing Futures also extends well beyond the museum galleries, offering a road trip experience guided through a website and phone app developed in collaboration with the computer science department at the University of Colorado Boulder. The app offers six curated road trips organized by location and theme, highlighting historic and contemporary adobe structures dotting the landscape between the southwestern towns of Fort Garland and Taos.

The app also includes a playlist compiled by the exhibition’s artists to set the mood as visitors drive between the locations. This expansive engagement with adobe artworks, homes, churches, and community spaces serves as a living archive of memory, labor, and cultural continuity.

As Colorado reflects on 150 years of statehood and 250 years of nationhood, Unearthing Futures offers visitors a timely opportunity to examine histories and cultural practices that predate state and national borders, while fostering meaningful dialogue about our shared future. The Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center in south-central Colorado’s San Luis Valley is a fitting location for this immersive experience.

Fort Garland was built on the homelands and sacred spaces of Indigenous communities, including the Ute, Jicarilla Apache, and Navajo (Diné). The area was claimed by Spain in the 16th century and later governed by Mexico until the region became part of the United States in 1848. Fort Garland was established in 1858 as a US Army outpost – ten years after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the US-Mexico War and ceded vast territories to the United States, forever changing the map of North America.

The Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center makes this historic place accessible for visitors to explore life in a nineteenth-century military fort by walking the parade grounds and touring five of the original adobe buildings. These adobe buildings require ongoing maintenance. Historic photographs from the History Colorado collection show how traditional artisans known as adoberas helped restore Fort Garland’s adobe buildings in the 1950s and 60s.

“Unearthing Futures amplifies the deep connections of land, history, and culture that unite southern Colorado and northern New Mexico,” said Eric Carpio, Director of Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center. “This partnership honors shared stories and traditions while inviting communities to reflect on a landscape and heritage that transcends state borders. Fort Garland Museum is thrilled to collaborate with the team at the Harwood to bring to life a project spanning roughly 80 miles across two states and centuries of history.”

The Fort Garland Museum is celebrating the opening of Unearthing Futures with an event featuring artist meet and greets, live music by the Arellano Brothers, food baked in a traditional adobe horno, and interactive activities for all ages. The opening celebration is free and open to the public on June 28 from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Harwood Museum of Art’s opening on June 27 marks the occasion with an artist panel followed by a celebration and after party.

Unearthing Futures will be on view at both museums through February 28, 2027. The exhibition is included with General Admission tickets at each location.

History Colorado is also offering a Tours & Treks excursion departing Denver in late September to explore both museums and a few historic adobe structures along the way. Registration for this excursion closes on August 18, 2026.

Cultivating and crafting the perfect mixers takes time and age-old processes.

Everything old is becoming new again, with summer drink choices also joining in on the trend. Sweet and savory drinks designed from what you can grow in your garden are making a comeback, providing a way to preserve the fruits of your labor or that of your local growers, if your green thumb isn’t fully developed yet.

Vintage Vibe

A refreshing drink called a Shrub was popular as a way to extend the life of produce before refrigeration hundreds of years ago. It can be made from locally grown fruits, sugars and vinegars with 2-4 days maceration time and a 2-4 week shelf life in the refrigerator. Phil Giomassis from Japango Boulder explained their process for making this base for fruity mocktails.

“What you’re doing is taking fruit, this time it’s strawberry, and you take two parts fruit to one part brown sugar,” said Phil. “You let this macerate for 24-48 hours; that’s going to extract a lot of oils and make an oleo saccharum syrup. Then you mix that syrup with one part Balsamic vinegar and let that macerate for another 24-48 hours in the fridge.”

Japango on Pearl Street in Boulder offers not only the Shrub Drink, perfect for mocktails and mixing cocktails, but also a Garden Party drink that contains carrots and an Old Fashioned-type drink made with shitake mushrooms.

After it’s ready, you take the sweet and tart mixture and add soda water to serve, giving it an effervescent, bubbly feel.

Pick your produce

If you are just practicing, or a professional, at growing greens, fruits, and vegetables you can pluck these ingredients right from your garden. Those thirsty for a refreshing drink, but lacking a gardener’s tender touch, can get what they need at the Boulder Farmer’s Market, which runs every Saturday, April through November from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many of the growers there are able to produce fresh produce in greenhouses, making them ready for early spring delivery to the market.

Some of the produce you’ll need for your summer sips is native to Colorado, though if it’s found in the wild, is likely totally different than what you buy at the market. Tommy Roth, with the Colorado State University Extension Office, said that native plants like strawberries, blackberries and raspberries would be different when picked from the wilderness.

“The Boulder raspberry… is not going to be like if you’re expecting a raspberry, you’re going to be like, ew,” said Roth. “What is this thing that’s not sweet?” And as for the native strawberries, Roth said with a chuckle, “I wouldn’t say they are tasty, but I wouldn’t say they are not, not tasty.”

Vendor views

The farmers market offers much of what you need to get started creating your concoctions, including plant starters grown in a greenhouse over the winter that you can just pop into your garden and nurture through the growing season for your Shrub Drink needs.

One popular farmers market vendor, The Fresh Herb Company, offers herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Jonathan Rogerson who works at Fresh Herb said they have three greenhouses as well as farmland for producing plant starts, as well as peppers, cucumbers, and hanging flower baskets. Like most good things it takes time to grow the herb starter plants. “The largest rosemary was planted last fall,” explained Rogerson.

“You can never be in a bad mood at the farmers market,” said Jonathon Rogerson, with The Fresh Herb Company, which offers many herb plants to put in your own garden, as well as greens and tomatoes, lavender and other beautiful flowers.

Rogerson said the company also makes a lavender spray that is perfect for adding flavoring to drinks, with a spritz or two proving a floral pop to your summer sip.

At the farmer’s market you’ll also find pressed juices for mocktails and cocktails. Cocktail Caravan does all the work of creating refreshing drinks and mixers ready to pour over ice. A dried orange garnishment sweetens the deal.

Seasons savings

Different fruits and vegetables ripen at different times over the summer, enabling you to create a varied menu of seasonal elixirs. Melons are the bumper crop for Monroe Family Farms, which is located east of Greeley. Robert Thompson said the reason they grow so well is the sandy soil in the area. The muskmelons, cantaloupe, and honey dew will be ready for market in July.

And with a Shrub Drink, your summer doesn’t have to end just because the growing season does. “Now you can have your Colorado peaches into the winter,” pointed out Giomassis.

Whether you’re growing the goods yourself or frequenting the farmers’ market, sipping summer drinks never tasted so good.

When the Front Range finally thaws and the skies stretch out blue and wide, there’s no better time to park yourself on a patio. From breezy brunches to fire-lit evenings, the local area offers an impressive spread of al fresco experiences—whether you’re sipping spritzes on a rooftop in Boulder or chasing kids through a cider garden in Lafayette.

Start with Acreage in Lafayette, arguably the most rambunctious patio on this side of the Flatirons. This adult-friendly backyard paradise features cider flights, yard games, big open skies, and a lawn perfect for sprawling with friends—or feral toddlers. It’s a family-friendly party vibe, complete with a whole hill to roll down. There’s always another cider within reach, and the sunsets here tend to show off.

Looking for variety? Try Community in Lafayette for excellent food and laid-back small-town energy, The Post Chicken & Beer in Longmont for family-style comfort food under string lights, or Waterloo in Louisville, where the rooftop patio feels like your coolest friend’s backyard cookout. In Erie, Birdhouse, the sister restaurant to Community, offers to-die-for tacos and vibrant ramen dishes (yes, really) and both a street-level and secret rooftop patio. Most are dog- and kid-friendly, with shades, umbrellas, misters, and heaters to stretch the season well into shoulder months.

But two Boulder standouts deserve a deeper look: River and Woods and Rosetta Hall, each offering a unique take on what makes a patio more than just an outdoor table.

Tucked into the historic shell of John’s—Boulder’s former italian fine-dining staple—River and Woods reimagines the restaurant patio as a backyard retreat with just a touch of storybook charm. “We wanted it to feel like you’re meeting at your grandma’s house,” said General Manager Maddie Curry. “Everyone loves their family, and every family is a little weird.”

The patio’s main, long community table is cut from a single massive tree, swirling purple grain echoing the whimsical vibe of the “forest room” in back. It’s rustic but intentional: alpine-inspired without leaning on kitsch. An adjustable roof keeps it breezy on hot days and cozy in winter, with heaters, lambskin shawls, and blankets at the ready. At the holidays, they turn it into a winter wonderland of twinkle lights and wreaths—sometimes warmer than the drafty historic house it’s attached to.

A block off Pearl Street, Rosetta Hall is a design-forward food hall with a rooftop patio built for everything from brunches with grandma to late-night DJ sets. “It’s something for everyone,” said Director of Operations Sarah Beckwith. “We’ve got big community tables, cabanas, fire pits, and spaces to gather—whether you’re on a team retreat or just out with friends.”

This isn’t just a patio—it’s a vibe. Misters and massive shades keep it cool in summer, while fire pits, heaters, and hot toddies with High West whiskey warm things up in the winter. They’ve even leaned into ski-lodge aesthetics in the off-season, complete with ski-lift photo ops and seasonal cocktails like the Garden Brrrrritz—a frozen take on their elderflower gin spritz.

Rosetta’s food stalls keep things casual and eclectic. Try the Salatim from Amira for a sampling of dips, veggies and falafel. The Al Pastor Tacos from Cruz offer a casual meal while lounging on the expansive cabanas. Another great patio option is the Burrata and Crostini from Amalfi. Bonus: nearly every cocktail has a non-alcoholic counterpart. 

In Erie, the summer Erie Eats Al Fresco initiative has allowed restaurants to extend dining into sidewalks and parking spaces, and the town supports local events that activate outdoor areas with live music and food trucks. Louisville has followed suit with seasonal street closures and permit flexibility, helping downtown spots maximize outdoor seating with minimal red tape.

As city leaders recognize how vital patios have become to small business recovery and community connection, residents get to enjoy the benefits: more sunshine, more music, and more memorable meals under Colorado skies.

Dark storm clouds stretched out from the Rocky Mountains, shrouding one side of Chatfield Reservoir. Yet to the left, the sun shone brightly through thick white clouds. The light created a rainbow that stretched across the water, making a path for the 40 or so sailboats that darted around.

It was a Wednesday night, which meant members of the Colorado Sail and Yacht Club were out in full force for an evening of racing. A pontoon boat sat anchored in the middle of what looked like organized chaos to a rookie sailor. On it sat the race commissioners.

“You have a Capri 22 coming up on your port side,” said Mike Sotir, who was working the fore deck of the Zulu, a J30 sailboat. “You see it?” Along with being a CSYC member, Sotir was a former student-now-instructor at the Victoria Sailing School based in Denver. And his sailing ventures have brought him all over the world from Colorado’s lakes to the Adriatic Sea.

“Yep, I see them,” said Trey Hegstrom, another instructor at the Victoria Sailing School and commodore of the CSYC. Hegstrom grew up in Minnesota, where he learned to sail dinghies — small, lightweight sailboats. Also aboard were fellow Victoria Sailing School instructors John Ingell, Bob Ratliff, and Tony Cochrane.

The pontoon sounded the first of four horns and flew the “class” flag to designate which boats were going to start (The race was split into three groups by sailboat type.).

“There’s the five-minute countdown,” said Sotir.

“Sailboat racing is the only sport where competitors get a running head start,” said Hegstrom with a smile as he continued to circle the other boats, some of which had already started their racing divisions. Others, like the Zulu crew, were waiting to begin.

Another horn sounded, and the preparation flag went up.

“Four minutes,” announced Sotir.

For the race, the boats had to hit different numbered buoys anchored throughout the lake. Ratliff marked the course on an 8.5 x 11-inch laminated map with a dry-erase marker.

With less than a minute to go, Hegstrom pointed us to the starting line. The final horn sounded, and off we went.

This is sailing in Colorado.

Sailing in the desert

“There’s sailing in Colorado?”A question every sailing instructor in the landlocked state has been asked multiple times.

Bill Edwards, who joined CSYC back in 1997, is one of the original members, and he is also a volunteer for the club’s races. “I joke that I moved to the desert to learn to sail. But if there is a puddle, we will sail it.”

Melissa Gorchynsky, executive director of Community Sailing of Colorado, who teaches classes at Cherry Creek, Boulder Reservoir, and Standley Lake, expressed a similar sentiment. She sailed in Annapolis, Maryland, known as America’s sailing capital for a number of years. But after moving to Colorado, she thought she had “turned in my sailing gloves for climbing shoes.” Fortunately, that’s not exactly how things worked out. After moving here Gorchynsky reached out to the Denver Sailing Association to see if they needed any volunteers.

“The fleet captain was like ‘What are you doing Saturday?’” And she found herself sailing that same weekend. “It’s really interesting to move to a landlocked state, knowing that there are other people who are water starved.”

Where there is a lake, you are likely to find a club. There is Dillon Marina Sailing School in the high country, Union Sailing Club in northern Colorado, Lake Pueblo Sailing Club in the south, and many others. While the landlocked bodies of water give mariners a place to go, sailing on mountain lakes presents its own unique set of challenges.

Dillon Reservoir, for instance, might seem perfect for sailing along 26.8 miles of shoreline. At over 9,000 feet above sea level, according to the Denver Gazette, it’s “the world’s highest deep-water marina.” High-elevation pressure systems can lead to instant weather changes, with a lake being no exception.

“It’s insane to sail up here because the air is really thin,” said Gorchynsky. “It doesn’t feel like sailing at sea level at all. Whitecaps form on the water at sea level when the wind is blowing at about 13 knots. Whereas in the Front Range, it’s about 15 knots, and at Dillon Reservoir it’s about 18 knots.[15 miles per hour.] So you can look out at the water and think, ‘It’s not that windy,’ and then you get out there, and it’s a completely different story.” She goes on to explain that up at Lake Dillon, the wind can be especially erratic and seems to come at you from all different directions. “I have been on boats where the indicator flags on opposite sides are pointing at each other.”

Tim Geisler, founder and lead instructor of Nautilus Sailing based in Crested Butte, echoes this sentiment. “The changing conditions really keep sailors on their toes. So if you can sail the high mountain lakes, you can sail most places.”

Initially, when Nautilus opened in 2010, they sailed the Blue Mesa, the largest lake in Colorado. But the sailing season is pretty short there, especially when compared to other places, so the school’s focus shifted. They now bring students to different spots nationally and internationally. This aligns with Gorchynsky’s adage, “If you can sail here, you can sail anywhere.”

Getting out on the water in Colorado

For someone who is interested in giving the sport a try, there are ample clubs and schools throughout the state eager to get more prospective sailors out on the water.

Just be careful, though: “Sailing is addictive,” said Sotir.

The Victoria Sailing School offers classes at Chatfield, Cherry Creek, and Carter Lake. “We have been growing each year,” said Tibor Van den Wildenbergh, who co-owns the school with his wife Erica Cook.His father-in-law started the Victoria Sailing School back in the 1980s, making it the oldest sailing school in the state. “We have around 450 kids in our summer programs, and our adult classes have been expanding. And much of our marketing is word of mouth. Our students become champions of the school.”

After completing beginner courses, students can then go on to take more advanced theory, sailboat maintenance, and navigation classes. Along with classes in Colorado, the Victoria Sailing School offers sessions in California and beyond.

“We can train somebody who has never sailed and get them to a place where they can buy a boat and go explore the world on their own,” said Wildenbergh. “We give people the opportunity to start their sailing journeys here and expand out to wherever they want to go.”

Similarly, Community Sailing of Colorado offers classes for both kids and adults. “It’s a great place to quote, unquote ‘get your feet wet,’” said Gorchynsky.

CSC’s camps start kids as young as five, where they learn important skills like water safety and sail on a boat with an instructor. Once they are seven, they can hit the water with their fellow campers with an instructor helping them from a motor boat.

“We have these teeny tiny 6 foot long by 3 foot wide boats that almost look like little floating bathtubs. They look awful,” said Gorchynsky with a laugh. “But the kids have so much fun tearing around the water with them. It looks like a mama duck motorboat being followed by a handful of little duckling sailboats. It’s too cute.”

Adult beginner classes are offered at both Boulder and Cherry Creeks, with two different sizes of boats depending on where you are sailing. The classes are three hours long and meet once a week for a month. Additionally, once students complete the starter course, they have the option to dip their toes in the water, so to speak, and explore racing.

“On Thursday nights, we race at Cherry Creek,” explained Gorchynsky. “It’s run by the Denver Sailing Association who has volunteer skippers such as myself. We invite graduates, so they can see if they want to take it to the next level or have any interest in racing. It’s a really fun social scene. Just show up. We will get you on the water. We have a strict ‘no person left on shore policy.’”

Additionally, CSC partners with different organizations to offer adaptive sailing programs that allow individuals with cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities to experience the water for a day. CSC also offers low or no-cost spots at sailing camps for kids whose families would otherwise not be able to afford it. And they help promote Able to Sail, which offers programs specifically designed for LGBTQIA+ youth.

Finding community

At the end of the day, “It’s all about the people,” says Ingell. Cruising around Chatfield — when the instructors weren’t talking strategy or making comments about the fishermen who plopped their boats right in the middle of the action — the crew was eager to talk about their love of the sport and what makes sailing in the Centennial State so special.

According to Wildenbergh, just about every major lake and reservoir has a club.“Since everyone is spread out, the sailing community is a bit fragmented,” he said. “But each club’s community is so much bigger than you would expect. If you just show up on a race night and meet people, there are plenty of chances to get on the water.”

Gorchynsky explains that in places like Annapolis, people just assume you sail. When you go out to a bar, it’s not, “Where do you work?” she explained, but “Who do you sail with?”

Out here, maybe one has to work a bit harder to find the community, but once one finds it, they are golden.“I was driving the work van once, and someone started honking at me and asked me to roll down my window at a stop light,” said Gorchynsky. “They just yelled ‘Hi! I sail too!’ And it just speaks to the fact that we are all crazy enough to need to be on the water wherever we can. And we will support anybody who feels that kind of passion.”

Join The Team And Volunteer With Us

Don’t just go to the Telluride Jazz Festival, become a part of it!

We’re looking for reliable, hardworking and fun-loving individuals to join our team. We need hundreds of volunteers to put the festival together so it’s a great way to meet new friends, earn a 3-Day festival pass, staff t-shirt and be a part of the “behind the scenes” action. All you have to do is fill out the application and choose the shifts and department that you’d like to join (box office, customs, park operations).

What Do I Have To Do?

Volunteers must complete two 5-6 hour shifts in order to earn a 3-Day Festival Pass. Shifts are available in a variety of positions before, during, and after the festival. Volunteers who are scheduled for pre-festival or post-festival shifts that are 9 am – 6 pm (8 hours) only need to complete one shift in order to earn a 3-Day Festival Pass. Shifts are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to apply early!

What’s In It For Me?

Volunteers will receive a 3-Day Festival Pass and a Festival Staff T-Shirt! We strive to make volunteering as easy and fun as possible. Volunteering is also a great way to meet friends and catch a glimpse of the “behind-the-scenes” action of festival production.

Anything Else I Need To Know?

All volunteers must be 18 or older to apply. All volunteers must submit an application below to be considered for a volunteer position. If accepted as a volunteer, you must complete two shifts (5-6 hours each) in exchange for a 3-Day festival pass and a festival staff t-shirt. We typically assign each volunteer one morning shift and one afternoon or evening shift.

 Camp out in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Telluride Town Park. Artist Spotlight: Butcher Brown

This Richmond, Virginia-based band calls their intriguing, jazz-fusion sound, “solar music.” It’s a fluid blend of soul, funk and rock that glides into acid-jazz-like realms, but really, don’t try to slap a label on their music. They mine the past for new musical adventures and on their latest record, Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey featuring Tennishu and R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND, they explore big band sounds, fusing in elements of hip-hop and Southern soul. Butcher Brown is a fresh, young presence on the jazz scene, unafraid to take all their influences and shape them into a sound that is at once new and familiar. As band member, Corey Fonville says, “We get daps from the jazz cats, the rap scene, the indie scene, and everyone else.” We’re down with that.

Ruin: A New Play at Dairy Center for the Arts

Take a historic look into Colorado’s past via Blunt Force Drama and its premiere of Ruin: A New Play by Aaron Klass. It takes place in the Colorado territory during the spring of 1865 (many years prior to Colorado achieving statehood), in the ruins of old Fort Vasquez. A woman enlists the help of two frontiersmen to find her missing husband and the investigation leads them through an unexpected journey. Drawing on historical source material, this script paints a fictional portrait of the early years of Colorado’s history. The Flobots at Levitt Pavilion 

“For us, the question remains the same. How do we use our music to speak to inspire positive transformation? And the answer is the same: we have to reach people deep down — in unexpected, visceral ways.” That quote is from Flobots frontman Jamie “Jonny 5” Laurie’s interview with YS back in 2017, while the band was touring in support of that year’s release NoEnemies, a double-EP of original and well-known protest songs. Since then, they’ve continued to tour heavily and released several new singles, all featuring their patented style of politically relevant activist hip-hop. Original art by Luis Eades at Dairy Center for the Arts

The Dairy Center for the Arts is home to a few visual arts galleries. Beginning July 7 is an exhibition of original paintings by Luis Eades, with an opening reception on July 8 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eades was born in Madrid, Spain in 1923. His artistic career spanned nine decades and brought him to teach painting at the University of Colorado at Boulder for 38 years. “I make allusions in my work to the art of the past, as well as to cultures other than my own; I do so out of respect and because they have produced images and ideas that endure and enrich the way we perceive the world we live in,” Eades says in an artist statement from a previous exhibition at the William Havu Gallery in Denver. Los Lobos with Ozomatli at Chautauqua Auditorium 

Iconic American rock band Los Lobos is an unparalleled celebration of American cultural diversity, drawing from a deep well of influences including rock, folk, blues, and traditional Mexican music that spans across a career of more than four decades. They’ll be joined by LA-bred Grammy Award winners Ozomatli for what promises to be an unforgettable show at Chautauqua Auditorium on July 8. agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land at various locations in Boulder

In agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land, 18 local and national visual artists, in collaboration with Boulder County farmers, are exhibiting their works to showcase the connections between art and agriculture. These artists were commissioned to collaborate with farmers to shed light on the practices being used by the farming industry throughout the Front Range. The multi-venue exhibit includes work on view at two museums and site-specific installations at three local farms, including Ollin Farms in Longmont, the. The Book of Mormon at Buell Theatre 

One of the biggest and most extravagant musicals to tour the country is back in Denver for a few weeks – and tickets will surely be hard to come by. Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s hit musical The Book of Mormon returns to the Buell Theatre from June 21–July 2. The mega-hit musical follows the story of a pair of missionaries sent to the other side of the world. The original Broadway musical won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the New York Times has called it, “the best musical of this century.” Tickets range from $35 to $130. On a beautiful spring Sunday Catherine Staley admits visitors to Saint Vrain State Park, answering any questions they have. During a typical day she checks out people camping at the park, checks fishing licenses, and ensures that visitors are following the rules and being safe. This is her second season working at the park.

Statistically Staley represents a small demographic of the park ranger workforce. About 66% of park rangers are men and about 91% are white. Diverse representation is lacking within the field, but she hopes that she can represent the diversity the field can embody to those visiting the park, Staley said.

What got you into this field of work?
I went to school for wildlife biology at CSU and primarily was in research and was actually out in Reno and just wanted to come home and was applying for state jobs because I’m from Longmont. This state park was close to home. I was applying around and happened to stumble upon this place and got accepted here. This is my second season.

Do you work all year?
It’s just seasonal. The temporaries are only contracted out for nine months, and we have a three-month break. We are working full time throughout those nine months.

Do you take additional jobs during your off time?
This past winter I was working a little bit. I was substitute teaching. We don’t get paid a whole lot, so you kind of have to do winter work. I think having to do the winter work in order to do this job is totally worth it.

What are your favorite aspects of the job?
I think getting to interact with the public. It can be very rewarding. Obviously we have people who are frustrating at times, but being able to talk to the public and be their point of contact, especially in the field, and educate and make sure that they are being safe and following the rules and having a good time out here is kind of my favorite part.

Do you find that you can use your wildlife biology background in this job?
Not as much as I would like. Being at an entry-level point, obviously I don’t have a lot of the administrative authority to make projects for myself. I do feel like when people ask me questions about the ecosystem here, I’m able to talk about what I learned in school. Having an interest in herpetology throughout my undergrad, it’s cool to be able to see and actually identify the animals that we’re seeing and let everyone else in the park know a species catalog. That way they know and can let others know.

Do you feel like you face any barriers in the field?
I don’t feel like within this job I have a lot of obstacles. I feel like if I do ever come across them, our senior ranger and our park manager are always willing to listen and have conversations how, for me being a woman of color, I can come out into the park and be able to do my job well, especially with the other staff here, just making sure that everything is very cohesive for everyone, and no one is feeling uncomfortable or restricted in any way.

Do you feel like it was harder for you as a woman of color to be in this field?
I was very fortunate in my undergrad. I had a mentor who actually reached out to me and pushed me along to get to this point. I don’t feel like it was very hard, but had I not had that mentor, I would not be in this spot at all. I’m very grateful to have had those opportunities with that mentor. Before that I had no idea what I was doing. It was an opportunity when he would take specifically women in ecology and take them on research trips, and we would publish papers based on those excursions. Just having that experience and that opportunity almost placed into my lap, I feel like I was very fortunate to be in that position. All of the other rangers I work with are white men. The only other woman I work with, who is full-time staff, is a gate attendant and then our admin, but we don’t get to see them all the time, so at least as far as the rangers are concerned, I kind of have to hold my own a lot of the time with them, but I’m very grateful that they do listen and they understand the woes of being a woman.

Do you have any favorite memories of working at the park?
One actually just happened. We had a little gosling that had fishing line stuck around his leg, and he was not able to walk, so I was able to net him and get the line cut and reunite him with his family the other day. It felt really good to be able to do that. That’s definitely one that I’ll hold on to. I think that will motivate me for the rest of the season for sure.

What does a typical day on the job look like for you?
It’s usually different. In the morning we’re doing camping stuff, just with checkouts. Every day can look different, even if we’re doing the same thing like checking fishing licenses or making sure people have life jackets. Every conversation is different because every person is different. That’s why I like being out here. I like having time to walk around and talk to every single person who comes out to the park because you just never know what kinds of conversations you’re going to have with people, and I think even just being out here asking people how their days are going when they’re out here, it can brighten their day just a little bit.

Do you see yourself working in this field long term?
Yeah. The fall applications for full-time employees are going to open up in September. I wholeheartedly am going to apply. I really want to get in as a wildlife officer. I like working at the park, but we don’t get a lot of hands on with the wildlife, so that’s something that I’m really passionate about. I want to make sure that I can continuously work with wildlife throughout the rest of my career. I do want to keep at this. I’ve really fallen in love with the job and want to go on full time with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Is the field sustainable for those entering into it?
I think so. I feel like especially with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, there are a lot of different steps you can take to stay within the agency, whether you’re working with admin, you’re working as a gate attendant, or you’re a maintenance worker or a park ranger. There’s always a next step you can take. A lot of people will start out in the entrance and then maybe next season they apply to be a park ranger. That’s absolutely doable. Even just being in the park in any aspect can help you transfer really well into other departments. There’s a lot of different avenues where people can stay with the agency, and they usually end up doing it.

Twenty Hands High, July 6

One of country music’s hottest bands in the Rocky Mountain region, CW and Twenty Hands High is proof that there’s strength in numbers.

The band’s single “Back to Wichita” has grown from 133,00 plays to over 350,000+ across digital platforms and streaming outlets. What’s more, the song has netted a nod for “Song of the Year” by the Mississippi Music Foundation as well as it has been nominated for a Josie Music Award in several Categories.

The Country Crooner has been blazing trails since former his Colorado-based band in 2017. Working relentlessly to grow CW & Twenty Hands High’s popularity among venue promoters and country music enthusiasts, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist has also crafted a solid set of original songs.

The Hard work has paid off. Along with his Denver cohorts, lead guitarist Mark Gabert, bassist Jodie Woodward, and drummer Scotty Rivera, CW & Twenty Hands High has opened for national acts like Pat Green, Wade Bowen, Josh Ward, Pam Tillis, Chancey Williams, Suzy Bogguss, and Sam Riggs.

Today, CW & Twenty Hands High keeps busy zig-zagging the States, playing some of the region’s hottest honky-tonks and dancehalls flecked across Colorado and the surrounding states, including the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and the Outlaw Saloon (Cheyenne Frontier Days) in Wyoming, the Beacon Icehouse in Montana, Joe’s Honky Tonk in Nebraska, the Wichita Union Stockyards in Kansas, and the Grizzly Rose and the Whiskey Baton in Colorado, to name a few.

Delta Sonics, July 13

The Delta Sonics music takes a Chicago Blues base and seasons it with Swing, Delta, N’awlins R&B and some early Rock n’ Roll . They were Westword’s best blues band in Denver the last six of eight years. The band made the semi-finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis  2012.The band has also played in Kansas City, St. Louis and New Orleans among other cities.

Averaging 250 gigs a year before 2020, they’re comfortable playing large events and concerts as well as smaller venues.  The band has played the Taste of Colorado, the Boulder Creek Fest, the Greeley Blues Jam, Pearl St. Blues & Brews, the Five Points Jazz Festival, Triniddadio, Bohemian Nights, the Cherry Creek Arts Fest and many others.

Al Chesis supplies vocals & foot stomping showmanship but it’s his harmonica playing that grabs you. He has been a Hohner endorser since 1992. Bob Pellegrino supplies the dazzling, slide guitar. Bob was the Colorado Blues Society’s best slide guitar player in three years in a row. Alissa Chesis on bass and Stefan Flores on drums ‘drive the bus’.

The Sonics have  been THE Mile Hi ‘go-to’ band for touring Blues national acts for nearly 15 yrs. The band has backed national blues acts like Big Bill Morganfield, Steadyrollin’ Bob Margolin, Ronnie Baker Brooks, grammy -nominated Lurrie Bell, grammy -nominated John Primer, the late Pinetop Perkins, and the late Bo Diddley.

The Delta Sonics opened for BB King (twice), Robert Cray (three times), and Jimmy Vaughn (twice) among many others.

Al Chesis also guests on Big Head Todd’s album “Black Beehive” on the cut “I Get Smooth”

Hazel Miller & The Collective, July 20

Hazel Miller is not just a great singer; “She is a force of nature!” quotes the Rocky Mountain News. Her voice has been called “stunning, moving, and powerful.” Hazel has been a sought after performer in Colorado for more than three decades. The Hazel Miller Band was formed more than 2 decades ago. Hazel Miller and the Collective renamed themselves in 2020. The band performs an eclectic blend of Jazz, R&B, Blues, and original music. The band’s music is designed to make the audience dance and sing along. They play the music that excites and involves the listener.

A great highlight on January 13, 2015, was Ms. Miller’s singing of the national anthem at the inauguration of Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. Later on that night, the Governor’s Inaugural Concert featured the Lumineers, String Cheese Incident, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters with Ms. Miller. Ms. Miller performed at the FIS Alpine Ski Championships in Beaver Creek, Colorado on February 15, 2015, with an estimated international television audience of 180,000,000 viewers. Ms. Miller has been chosen to record a welcome greeting for visitors taking the trains to the main terminal at Denver International Airport.

The winter of 2014 marked the last full tour with Big Head Todd and the Monsters. They toured the entire country with great responses from audiences. Ms. Miller has appeared as a special guest of Big Head Todd and the Monsters for more than 19 years. The band had a great summer, in 2021 including opening two nights at Red Rocks. Headlining festivals all over Colorado; 2021 marked the 25th year performing at Boulder’s Band on the Bricks. They have opened for Al Green, James Brown, Michael McDonald, and many others. The band has appeared at major local festivals: Jazz in City Park, Lakewood Amphitheater’s Summer of Music, the Botanic Gardens in Denver and so many more.

Ms. Miller’s music can be heard on many local radio stations KOA, KBCO, KUVO, KRFC, KOTO, and KCNU. Nationally, Sirius Radio and XM Radio are playing her music on the “Real Jazz” and “B. B. King’s” Blues stations. Mark Ruffin, on “Real Jazz” XM Radio added Ms. Miller to the lineup fall of 2010 and she continues to be a requested performer on radio stations nationally, for example, Martha’s Vineyard, Charlotte, Miami, and Chicago. Ms. Miller sang on 6 tracks of the hit 2014 CD Blues Masters 3. This CD featured Mickey Thomas from Jefferson Starship and Tim Tucker, executive producer and lead guitarist on the CD. The reviews said this about Ms. Miller’s vocal performance: “Miller’s vocals would rival Koko Taylor”.

Gingerbomb, July 27

From the boroughs Of New York City, to the shores of Los Angeles, redheads are often seen as a scarce commodity.  However, against all odds, a group of seasoned ginger musicians miraculously united to form the world’s first all ginger supergroup—Gingerbomb. Together, they craft a sound based in rock, country and folk. Seasoned musicians Megan Burtt, Sara Dee, Zach Berkman, Casey Sidwell, and Ryan Vaughn form Gingerbomb.” The world’s all-ginger band finally takes center stage!

Copies of her debut novel, Winged and the Griffin’s Call will also be available. Come support a local author as she makes her way to the big leagues.

As for music, songwriter, guitarist and fiddle player Lucas Lawson is nowadays joined just about everywhere by mandolinist Leland Mackessy. The two young musicians from Santa Cruz, California play together to continue on the bluegrass/americana sound in Lucas’s own mellow and melodic songs.

Craft. It is associated with handwork, utility, and rooted in tradition. Under its umbrella fall particular materials:metal, wood, clay, fiber, and glass.

In “Crafted: Subverting the Frame”, Layl McDill, Mary Robinson and Andrea Alonge create using colorful contemporary concepts blended with traditional skills to subvert the framework that delineates art, craft, and design. Their work blurs the border between “high” and “low” art, while also breaking free from the confines of the rectangular “canvas”. Employing a broad range of materials, conceptual practices, ways of making, and modes of display that have been historically associated with craft objects, Alonge, McDill and Robinson come together to create a colorful and tactile experience. Boundaries are nebulous, and the compositions burst from the walls with color and uninhibited joy.

“For the love of the song” is a listening room style experience hosted at the Firehouse on Friday, June 2nd, 2023 from 6pm-8pm.

The special songwriter focused showcase features three singer songwriters sharing original songs in a song circle format.This month features Christopher Morse a Nashville Pop artist from Boulder,CO, Indie Folk artist Ingrid Avison of Nederland,CO and Folk Noir touring artist Angel Corsi by way of Longmont,CO. The trio will share their original songs on identity, growth, and grief and even coming together to support each other in their performance.

Take care of your cravings with eight restaurants, three food trucks, and a community lobster fest.

Just because we’re landlocked in Boulder County doesn’t mean that we have to go without seafood on hot summer days. We’ve scoped out the area’s best spots, from old standbys, to sushi, and kitchens on wheels.

From parks to breweries, here’s where you go to put a variety of fresh-caught seafood on your plate when you’re craving something from the ocean.

The sit-down stops

Spruce Farm & Fish – Let this be your stop for a Boulder hot weather happy hour. It’s complete with East and West Coast oysters on the half shell and an extended wine list to match. But if you’re looking for something more filling, Chef Mike Thom can also pull off blackened snapper over crawfish étouffée, a generous portion of seared scallops, or a spicier Caribbean shrimp made with grilled Gulf shrimp on rice noodles.

Boulder Cork – Along with a ton of other people, when we get off work early, we love to settle in at the Boulder Cork for a celebratory meal. While lots of people talk about the Boulder Cork for their steak, wine list, and fantastic bar, diners also love the restaurant for it’s seafood. We had the Sake Salmon when we stopped there, and we appreciated how lightly it was prepared, with a ginger flavor that was enough to be interesting but still let the salmon shine through. Although we haven’t had it yet, the Rocky Mountain Rainbow Trout over green chile mac and cheese has also caught our eye.

Sakura Japanese Cuisine and Sakura Sushi Express – Sushi is a healthy, flavorful way to get your fish fix this summer. For 25 years, Chef Sung Kho has been offering some of the most delicious versions of it in East Boulder County. In Longmont, Sakura Japanese Cuisine is a great choice if you’re looking for a sit-down Japanese experience. In Erie just off of Highway 7, there’s a second option —, Sakura Japanese Express that’s as convenient as it is delicious.

Casian Seafood – Looking for an intriguing take on a seafood boil? At Casian in Lafayette, Chef Dovi creates some of the area’s best seafood boils with their “Asian Cajun” approach that combines fresh seafood flavors with Vietnamese spice. We sat down and worked through two smaller sized boils — their lemongrass and traditional — both with shrimp, mussels, clams, crayfish, potatoes, and andouille sausage. The lemongrass was our favorite because we liked how the spices balanced out with the stronger seafood flavors.

Reelfish – Fish and chips is a classic summer plate of food and, if you have it prepared right, it’s crisp, light, and definitely not greasy. Reelfish is a fast casual restaurant where you don’t just have to order fish and chips, you have to specify the kind of fish that’s going to be fried. Options include cod, cajun swai, and, if you come on the right day, walleye, halibut, or fresh salmon. There’s also a range of sides including fried clam strips, oysters, shrimp, lobster rolls, lobster bisque, fish tacos, and chowder. This is a menu that keeps their fryer busy.

Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar – When diners are in Boulder and thinking of a restaurant that knows their seafood, Jax is one of the first places to come to mind. For years, people have been heading there for the raw bar and cocktails at happy hour. We’ve spent our share of after-work time there as well. Diners who are staying longer might want to try the Charred Spanish Octopus on smashed potatoes or their enormous Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. But this summer, we’re heading there with the family for Sunday Cioppino — snow crab, mussels, chopped crab, and shrimp in a tomato broth that’s made to inspire bread dipping.

Swaylo’s Tiki Restaurant & Bar – Sometime this summer, you’re going to find a time when you wish you were in the islands, but reality says you have to stay in Boulder County. When this feeling hits, you can at least do a little something about it if you go to Swaylo’s, which opened a bit over a year ago on Dry Creek Road in Longmont. They have plenty of seafood plates including ceviche, salmon with flavor-forward furikake seasoning, fried seafood, coconut shrimp, and fish tacos, with rum-infused fruity island drinks poured into classic tiki glassware to go with. We tried the Furikake Crusted Salmon — it had complex flavors that didn’t blast our palate.

Tortugas – Located across from the post office in Old Town Longmont, Tortugas has been quietly serving diners for years. It’s where you go if you want to pull up a chair for an amazingly well-made meal paired with unstuffy wine. We linger under the festive lights on the back porch when we can and enjoy a full meal featuring their fish of the day with a variety of sauces — we typically go with the mojo. Then there are two items we always get — the shrimp ceviche which is one of our favorites in the area and a bottle of Pete’s Heat hot sauce to take home.

The food trucks

Jimbeaux’s Cajun Cuisine, Crawfish Boils –  Though this truck is located in Fort Collins, it heads down our way from time to time. When you see it this summer, try to go. It can be found for special events at places like Left Hand Brewing or the Erie Farmer’s Market where Louisiana-born Chef James offers boils full of crawfish, sausage, corn, and red potatoes. When we have it, we pair it with beer from the brewery where the truck is parked. We also try to finish it off with Jimbeaux’s rum bread pudding, which is a sweet end to all the spicy goodness.

On the Hook –  If you made it your mission to try as many varieties of fish and chips this summer, we wouldn’t blame you. If that’s in your plan, line up at On the Hooks’ recognizable blue truck for plates of line-caught Alaskan cod and chips. While the truck can be seen at locations up and down the Front Range, they’re in our area frequently, offering plates stacked with fried goodness that’s satisfying but not too heavy.

The MAINE Event – This truck is New England seafood on wheels, operated by former Mainer-turned-Boulderite Chef Marc Kurnick. If you somehow don’t feel like you’re in the mood for lobster or his lobster rolls, you could try a swordfish BLT with a side of crisp coleslaw, fries, or clam chowder. As long as you’re in the mood for seafood, there are always options here.

The community fest

Niwot’s Lobster Fest – While there’s plenty of dining options for Boulder area seafood, one of our favorites is a non-restaurant-based option. Since 2021, Niwot has been creating their own New England Lobster Fest at Whistlestop Park. If all it had was lobster, we’d still attend because we can’t enjoy enough bright red, butter-soaked crustaceans, but this festival is even better because you’re eating lobster with 200 other neighbors. Along with that, you’ve got live music, wine, beer, cocktails, cookies, and ice cream all served on red and white checkered tablecloths. This fest has always been held to benefit a good cause. Last year’s benefit was for Marshall Fire Victims, and before that, the dinner benefitted area youth sports. This year’s event on June 3 will support Niwot’s Sculpture Park.

June 3: Michael Franti & Spearhead

June 9: The Burroughs

If you took a southern church revival band, dropped it in Greeley and added 200% more funk, you’d have one of Colorado’s best live shows. Join The Burroughs at Meow Wolf in Denver for their honey imastar album release party. Doors open at 8 p.m., tickets are $15 at Meowwolf.com.

Stafford Hunter

June 11: Stafford Hunter and Jazz Explorations

Recently relocated to Colorado, Trombonist Stafford Hunter was described in glowing terms by AllAboutJazz.com: “Yes, the (trombone)has its shortcomings, yet in the case of Hunter.. the musician does not. July 1: Flobots

Homegrown hip-hop darlings the Flobots make their Levitt Pavilion debut on the tail-end of their popular United States of Mind tour for what will be a fantastic, free show. Though their last full-length album Noenemies dropped in 2017, the band has released multiple singles since, and continues to bring smart, social commentary to the Colorado rap game. July 2: Toad the Wet Sprocket

It’s been 34 years since Toad the Wet Sprocket’s first album Bread & Circus (Abe Records, 1989) dropped to little fanfare. It wasn’t until their third outing, Fear (Columbia Records, 1991) that the band catapulted into national consciousness, thanks to two singles —  “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean” — charting on Billboard’s Top 20. Now touring in support of their new compilation album All You Want, they stop in at Mishawaka Amphitheatre for a Poudre River session. July 20: Cypress Hill with The Colorado Symphony

Cypress Hill became the first hip-hop group to have two albums on the charts at the same time when Black Sunday (Ruffhouse Records) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 on this date back in 1993. They’re upping their game for this 30th anniversary as they’ll be joined by the Colorado Symphony at Mission Ballroom in Denver to revisit the incredibly popular record, which went triple platinum. Aug. 9: Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley isn’t the only great act joining Trombone Shorty at Levitt Pavilion in Denver for this one. Mavis Staples and the Robert Randolph band are in tow as well, and we shouldn’t be surprised if everyone’s on stage at the same time. Aug. 17: Flogging Molly

Irish folk-punk septet Flogging Molly’s legendary hits like “Drunken Lullabies” and “Devil’s Dance Floor” have cemented them firmly in the hearts of punk lovers the world over, thanks to their irrepressible energy and the powerful social commentary in their songwriting. And while they’re approaching 30 years on the road, they remain as bombastic as ever. Catch them at Mission Ballroom. Exploding in popularity, accessible, and cheap, disc golf offers a great way to get outside and have some fun.

You are at the park or a campsite with friends, someone has an old cheap frisbee with some random company’s logo on it. Tossing it back and forth is fun for a while, but with a few beers involved you start thinking of something a little more challenging. Your buddy says, “Hey, I bet I could hit that tree trunk over there.” The challenge is on, and the next thing you know you’re a roving band of maniacs trying to hit things from a distance.

As far as I can tell, this is how disc golf was invented. But, like agriculture, it seems to have emerged spontaneously in many different places and is more ancient than we think.

The act of throwing something for the hell of it seems to be an urge innate to humans. In the animal kingdom humans are slow, weak, and clumsy with little armor. We make up for this with superior ingenuity — we used our brains to transfer energy to objects. Then we innovated, as humans tend to do, to chucking spears. Soon came bows and arrows, catapults, firearms, and warheads. It’s all basically just hurling a rock at a target.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the first game of disc golf occurred thousands of years ago with flat pieces of tree bark or tanned animal hide discs. It may be one of our most ancient forms of recreation.

But, to become an organized sport complete with sponsored professional athletes, it needed a catalyst. That happened in 1966 when “Steady” Ed Headrick, an employee at Wham-O, observed the fun people would have tossing a flat plastic lid around as it would glide through the air. He patented the first flying disc branded as the Frisbee.

The popularity of the Wham-O Frisbee took off. It was in 1970 that some of the first known organized disc golf competitions began in Rochester, New York. The advent of the frisbee caused an evolution into informal disc golf competitions. That group of friends from New York seized on an opportunity and, in 1974, organized the National City of Rochester Disc Golf Championship.

After that first tournament in Rochester, Headrick, known as “the father of disc golf,” went on to invent and patent the disc golf pole hole in 1975. Disc golf’s popularity grew slowly but steadily. Within a couple of decades professional disc golfers would gain sponsorship contracts from disc manufacturers. The best of the professionals today can make a good living playing the sport.

Other than tossing around thrift store frisbees at campsites and a failed attempt to teach my fat Corgi how to catch one, I have no experience playing disc golf. I once tried to learn traditional golf, which was pretty much a disaster. So, with those experiences in mind I met up with Mitch Sonderfan, a local former pro disc golfer at Erie’s Coal Creek Disc Golf Course.

At one time Sonderfan was ranked as high as 33rd in the world. He has been away from competing for a while, but it was clear to me that his interest in the sport was still there.

The first thing that surprised me was the number of different discs an experienced player will carry. It’s a lot like regular golf where you have a range of clubs for different situations and distances. In fact, even the terminology is the same. There are putters, drivers, and mid-range discs.

Just like traditional golf, disc golfers carry a special bag for their discs, and some professionals even have caddies. A typical disc golfer might have a dozen or so discs, but Sonderfan explained that you only need one to get started. Preferably it should at least be a regulation disc and not that chewed up old thrift store frisbee.

I remarked about the surprising number of people out on the course, and Sonderfan said it was actually a slow day. As Sonderfan explained it, when COVID-19 hit, disc golf exploded. It is played outside, is easily accessible, just about anyone can play it regardless of age or physical condition, and it’s cheap. Recreational etiquette, unlike traditional golf, which can be very specific and stuffy, is simple — don’t hit someone with your disc.

After our quick introduction I was eager to give it a go. We sauntered over to the first tee, and Sonderfan went up to demonstrate a classic backhand toss. His driver sailed smooth and straight, about 200 feet or so. It was a nice approach.

My turn. My throw was abysmal. I wanted to throw it flat, like Sonderfan had just demonstrated. The result was a disaster. All that curving and unnecessary height resulted in a toss that traveled farther to the left than it did forward. Let’s just say I could have thrown a football farther and with a lot more accuracy.

Several bad throws later, we made it to the hole.

Sonderfan made an incredible throw that I thought for a moment might be an ace. His driver settled just a few feet to the left of the basket. He seemed quite pleased with it.

Now it was my turn again. Sonderfan reminded me not to try to throw it as hard as I could. So, I slowed it down, concentrated on keeping my disc level. It was like a dream. My driver sailed from my hand, low and tight, no wobble, its trajectory dead on to the target.

I thanked Sonderfan for his time and instruction. Perhaps other disc golf courses were different, but here I sensed no pretension.

I liked all of that. The simplicity and carefree nature of it all was refreshing. And, then there was that one almost perfect throw right at the end when everything just clicked. It was probably luck. But it hooked me in, and I spent part of that evening price checking discs and bags.

It’s summertime and canned cocktails are the way to go. The durable packaging is perfect for taking beverages outdoors from camping to picnics or anywhere else you want to guard against container leaks or where glass isn’t allowed.

Beverage makers have started to figure this whole canning thing out, and it’s possible we’re entering a golden age of cocktails in a can. Boulder County has had a front row seat to the action with the evolution of canned beverages and technologies in our backyard. This growth started with Oskar Blues’ ability to convince drinkers that high-quality beer could come in cans (Thanks, Dale’s Pale Ale!) and included the presence of Ball Corporation’s aluminum packaging and the founding of Wild Goose canning lines.

When things come in cans, we jump on them, so here are some canned specialties you can find in our area this summer. Our list purposely didn’t include wine, seltzer, beer, and kombucha because that offering category is already familiar to customers. Instead, we focused on other crafted alcoholic and nonalcoholic tasty drinks that are part of an emerging trend.

Rooted Craft Kitchen – Cherry Amore in Boulder

Rooted Craft Kitchen at Avanti Food and Beverage was the first place that introduced us to a shrub — a beverage made from an acidulated fruit-based base that can be used in either craft cocktails or mocktails. Their zero-proof form, called a Cherry Amore, is a great option for summer drinking that keeps you cool. It’s made with fresh ingredients including cherry syrup.The vinegar balances it all with a splash of acid and is as nuanced as anything we’ve ever had, alcoholic or not. We can picture bringing it to a barbeque, having it after a hike, or sipping it on our porch.

Stem Ciders – Ciders and cocktails in Lafayette

Stem Ciders has taken advantage of canned packaging for years now, and they still offer great innovative options for canned items ranging from traditional to tangerine to the more floral lavender. There are also taproom-only canned mixed beverages including a Singapore sling (tart, with gin-like botanicals), a rum runner (tropical), and a cobra’s fang (dry and forward). What’s even better is that if you head to Stem’s Lafayette restaurant Acreage, they have the perfect spot to enjoy the outdoors in one of their Adirondack chairs, next to the fire, near their orchard, with a view of the Flatirons — perfect for a late summer evening.

Abbott and Wallace Distilling – Six distinct cocktails from Longmont

Longmont’s Abbott and Wallace Distilling makes it easy to grab a cocktail to take with you wherever you’re heading this summer. Six options range from their La Chupacabra, which blends Cobañero whiskey with apple, ginger, lime juice, and seltzer, to a canned Tom Collins, a mint julep, a gin and tonic and an amaro spritz. We like what we’re drinking here, and we like that it makes it easy to bring a full-fledged adult beverage with you as you get active. But we also love how tied in this business is with the community. Supporting them is, truly, supporting a hometown business.

The Old Mine – Traditional, pear, and adjunct Handlebar hard ciders in a can from Erie

The Old Mine crafts their ciders locally in Erie, right off of County Line Road and serves them at their adult-only taproom in their production facility or at their restaurant on Briggs Street. However, these ciders can literally travel a lot further once they’re canned. The traditional recipe is always our go-to, and if we don’t have that, we enjoy the lighter pear cider. But these aren’t the only two options for packs. There are spicy, fruit-based, and bourbon options that pair well with summer foods.

Infinite Monkey Theorem – Peach bellini wine cocktail from RiNo

Bellinis are a great summer drink, and this one, made by the winery that dialed back all their fermented grape fuss, made wine accessible, and put it into cans. This cocktail is refreshing enough for a brunch, picnic, or even to sip on the water whether you’re canoeing, paddleboarding, or rafting. It’s also enjoyed by a range of tastes, so if you bring it with you, your friends are going to take you up on an offer to share.

St. Vrain Cidery – Fruit-forward and creative ciders from Longmont

For a few years now, St. Vrain Cidery has been providing the public with all sorts of ciders from their spot tucked into an alley on Terry Street. While they offer ciders that are both made in house and made elsewhere, they take care to seasonally curate what they put on tap. This summer’s offerings include multiple fruit-forward possibilities including their dry chokecherry, which is tart and particularly summer-sippable.
