BPD Unveils New Spanish Traffic Form to Help Community Members & Better Serve the Public

BOULDER, Colo. – To better serve the evolving needs of our diverse community, the Boulder Police Department is proud to announce the official launch of a companion Spanish-language traffic citation and resource form.

This initiative is designed to bridge communication gaps, enhance officer and community member safety, and increase department efficiency.

The idea started within BPD’s Traffic Unit, which identified a significant hurdle during traffic stops: even when roadside interpretation services were used, drivers often left the scene with a physical citation printed exclusively in English. This disconnect frequently led to:

• Missed court dates due to a lack of translated procedural instructions.
• Unpaid fines resulting from confusion regarding payment methods.
• Safety risks to everyone caused by increased time at the traffic stop, given the nature of interpretation services delays.

Beyond the legal implications for drivers, language barriers have historically strained city resources. On average, a traffic stop involving a language barrier takes three times longer to resolve and often requires the dispatch of additional officers to assist with translation. That also results in fewer officers available for other calls and slower response times to other calls.

By providing citations and resource documents in Spanish, the department expects to see a marked improvement in roadside efficiency, allowing officers to return to patrol more quickly while ensuring the driver fully understands their rights and responsibilities.

“Our goal is to ensure every interaction between an officer and a community member is clear, fair, and professional,” Chief of Staff Alastair McNiven said. “By providing these resources in Spanish, we are removing a significant obstacle to compliance and ensuring that everyone in our community has the tools they need to navigate the legal process successfully. I’m grateful for the input and contributions from our Community Connectors in Residence and other community members with lived experience who helped in the creation of this form.”

The new forms include translated information on how to pay fines, how to contest a citation in court, and where to find additional legal resources such as a court interpreter, information on driver’s licenses and license plate requirements, as well as contact information for Spanish-speaking BPD liaison officers.

[ Boulder County News ]

• Twelve people were indicted for allegedly using card-skimming devices at convenience stores across the county. By using these devices, the group was able to take close to $300,000 from unsuspecting shoppers.
• Visitors to Glenmere Park will not be greeted by an old familiar friend. The popular statue of a boy holding a fish he caught has been taken. The Prize Catch was sawed off of its pedestal and taken to parts unknown.
• A Boulder man, needing a ride home after being released from jail, improvised by stealing a fire truck. Richmond Takashi Johnson eventually lost control of the vehicle and was then given a ride right back to the jailhouse.
• The City Council in Lafayette delayed their decision on whether or not to close the Lafayette Cemetery to casket burials. A suggestion made by the state archeologist.
• On May 13, the Erie Town Council declared the community to be in a Stage 2 drought. Council said they took this proactive step as a precursor to what they predict will be a hot and dry summer season.

[ State News]

• An unexpected May snowstorm that brought more than two feet of snow to parts of the state brought a (small) boost to the snowpack. Scientists state that it’s a help but not enough to overcome the issues caused by the dry winter.
• Two bills concerning data centers that were working their way through the state legislature are dead. For now. This put data center regulation under the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.
• The Colorado Supreme Court ruled in favor of families seeking gender-affirming care when it ordered Children’s Hospital Colorado to restart treatment programs.
• Governor Jared Polis cut short the prison sentence that was being served by Tina Peters. The former Mesa County Clerk, a Trump supporter, was convicted of tampering with election equipment in her attempt to prove malfeasance in the 2020 election.
• Two minor earthquakes were registered earlier this month. The respective 3.1 and 3.0 quakes hit in a three-day span. They were the sixth and seventh registered quakes in the state in the past 30 days.

[ National News]

• In the midst of a burgeoning economic crisis at home and a tentative ceasefire in the war in Iran, President Trump travelled to China to discuss trade, tariffs, and other key issues. The summit concluded with no substantive agreements.
• The United States Supreme Court blocked the ruling from a lower court that would have seriously restricted access to abortion medications sent via the U.S. Mail.
• People around the world braced for the worst as it was discovered that a group of passengers aboard a cruise ship contracted hantavirus. The passengers, who are all back in their home ports, are being strictly monitored.
• A United States judge ruled that the government must bring back a Colombian woman who was deported to Congo. The woman had no ties to the country, which was initially refusing to take her.

• Residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda are on high alert as multiple cases of Ebola have appeared across the region. To date, there are 8 confirmed and 246 suspected cases being monitored.
• As the Iran War continues with no end in sight, it has been reported that the United Arab Emirates has quietly carried out several strikes against Iran.
• Despite the presence of a U.S. backed ceasefire agreement, Israel continues to attack civilians in Gaza.
• Protests rocked Bolivia as supporters of former president Evo Morales took to the streets to protest the country’s current economic situation.
• The Gold Coast of Australia faced its worst flooding in eleven years when more than a month’s worth of rain fell in just 24-hours.

Former Mesa County clerk and prominent election denier to be released after months of pressure from Trump and allies.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has commuted the prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, ordering her release on parole effective June 1.

Peters, a former Mesa County clerk who became one of the nation’s most prominent election deniers, was convicted in 2024 for allowing unauthorized access to election equipment after promoting false claims that the 2020 election had been stolen from Donald Trump. She was sentenced to nearly nine years in prison.

Polis said Friday that Peters committed a crime and deserved prison time, but argued her sentence was too harsh and may have improperly considered her protected speech. The Colorado Court of Appeals upheld Peters’ conviction in April but ordered that she be resentenced, finding concerns with how the original sentence was reached.

However, the decision also comes after months of sustained pressure from President Donald Trump and his allies, who repeatedly called for Peters’ release and portrayed her as a political prisoner. Trump publicly praised Peters and launched a barrage of criticism and political pressure directed at Colorado and Gov. Jared Polis over her imprisonment. Polis’ commutation effectively cuts her sentence to four years and four and a half months.

Polis repeatedly emphasized that the action was not a pardon.

“She’s a convicted felon. She deserves to be a convicted felon. She will remain a convicted felon,” Polis said.

Trump’s push for Peters’ release extended far beyond social media posts. Following his return to office, Colorado officials increasingly argued that Peters’ case had become intertwined with broader political retaliation against the state. State leaders pointed to disputes involving federal funding, proposed cuts and policy actions affecting Colorado, including fights over disaster aid, environmental transportation grants, efforts to dismantle NCAR in Boulder, SNAP requirements and the relocation of U.S. Space Command. Critics argued Peters had become a recurring flashpoint in broader political battles between Trump and Colorado.

Peters’ case also unfolded amid years of attacks on Colorado’s election system from Trump and election denial advocates. Trump repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that Colorado’s mail-in voting system and election process were vulnerable to widespread fraud or manipulation. Election officials across the political spectrum have pushed back on those claims, noting that Colorado’s system has long been regarded as one of the nation’s strongest and most secure. The state’s election process includes paper ballots, signature verification, ballot tracking and post-election audits, and repeated reviews have found no evidence of widespread election fraud.

The reaction across Colorado was immediate. Election officials, Democratic leaders and many residents flooded social media and political channels with criticism, with some calling the decision reckless and others accusing Polis of capitulating to pressure from Trump allies. The controversy places the governor at odds with many within his own political coalition during the final year of his administration.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser called the commutation “mind-boggling and wrong,” arguing that Peters was convicted by a jury for tampering with election equipment and undermining public trust in elections. Weiser warned that “caving to this president will only lead to more abuse from the bullying Trump administration.”

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold also sharply criticized the decision, calling the commutation “an affront to our democracy, the people of Colorado, and election officials across the country.” Griswold warned the move could “validate and embolden the election denial movement” and leave “a dark, dangerous imprint on American democracy for years to come.”

Griswold also pointed to the real-world impact of Peters’ actions. According to the Secretary of State’s office, the Mesa County voting equipment breach forced the county to replace nearly $1 million in election equipment and led Colorado to adopt new protections against insider threats involving election systems.

Matt Crane, executive director of the Colorado County Clerks Association and a Republican, warned that the decision sends a dangerous message to election workers. The organization accused Polis of “bending the knee” to political forces undermining confidence in elections and said county clerks felt abandoned by the governor’s decision.

Polis said Peters privately admitted wrongdoing in her clemency application, writing: “I made mistakes four years ago. I misled the Secretary of State when allowing a person to gain access to county voting equipment. That was wrong.”

Peters later thanked Polis publicly and said she plans to continue supporting what she describes as election integrity efforts and prison reform after her release.

A larger question may now follow the commutation: if months of pressure surrounding Tina Peters included threats, funding disputes and public attacks directed at Colorado, what happens next? Critics repeatedly argued that granting clemency would not halt broader political pressure from Trump or his administration. If those pressures continue after Peters’ release, the debate around Polis’ decision may shift from whether it was politically costly to whether it changed anything at all.

[ Boulder County News ]

• The state and BNSF reached a $333M deal to take the next step forward in bringing passenger rail service to Broomfield, Louisville, Boulder, Longmont and Loveland.
• The Sundance Film Festival is expected to bring thousands of visitors to the area and Boulder wants to be prepared. The City Council unanimously approved a resolution that would allow residents to sublease their homes expressly to those out of town visitors attending the festival.
• A Superior woman was struck by lightning while out for a late evening walk. First responders revived her and she is now in critical condition.
• Officials in Erie have been accused of participating in discussions to lease, or sell outright, the town’s mineral rights. These deliberations have been held in Executive Sessions which have excluded public interactions and input.
• Ranked choice voting may still appear on the ballot in Lafayette this November. After seeing the debate for that type of election change play out in neighboring communities, city council members said they are willing to discuss options to put in front of their residents.
• A disaster was averted in Eldorado Canyon State Park when rescuers intervened to save a group of three climbers who had lost their way. Drone reconnaissance and traditional rescue team skills were combined to help return the stranded team to safety.
• Sara Loflin was removed from her role as PTSA Treasurer at Meadowlark School in Erie. At issue was the unauthorized removal of $70,000 from the PTSA fundraising account. Although the funds have been returned, the incident is currently under police investigation.

[ State ]

• If you were a graduate of the Academy Driving School in Colorado Springs you might have just lost your license. The Colorado DMV said that nearly 500 drivers would have to retake their driver’s test because of fraud charges at the school. 
• According to a recent poll, the majority of voters in Colorado approve putting limits on cell phone and social media use among minors. 
• The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment released their revised final 2025 jobs report. It showed a loss of just over 11,000 jobs through the end of 2025.
• XCEL has proposed a new rate structure that would require data centers, and other users of high amounts of electricity in Colorado, to pay higher rates.
• In order to more precisely understand what the dry winter weather will mean for the state, SNOTEL measured mountain snowpacks and compared the results to historical data. They found the snowpack to be at 24% of where it should be at this time.

• Three people were killed and 14 were injured in a mass shooting at an Austin, Texas bar. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
• Pam Bondi was fired as U.S. Attorney General. Deputy Attorney general Todd Blanch was installed in the role on a temporary basis.
• Four astronauts aboard the Artemis II spacecraft travelled further from Earth than any human before them. They would circle the moon and successfully return to Earth.
• The complete Epstein Files still have not been released, breaking federal law.

• Hungarian Prime Minister lost his reelection campaign and was ousted from a role he held for sixteen years.
• Scientists in England announce that they have successfully tested a lab?grown oesophagus. They believe this will help people regain normal swallowing functions.
• Iran and the United States met for ceasefire talks. After 21 straight hours, Vice President Vance announced that no agreement was reached.
• The Wireless festival in London was cancelled because the headliner would not be present. The British Home Office banned musician Kanye West from entering the country due to his past remarks.

BOULDER, Colo. — The Boulder City Council signaled support this week for keeping Boulder Municipal Airport open indefinitely, a move that could limit the city’s ability to redevelop the 179-acre site in the future.

According to reporting by Boulder Reporting Lab, councilmembers took a 5–4 straw poll during an April 23 study session, directing staff to move forward with plans that would allow the city to seek federal aviation funding.

Accepting funding from the Federal Aviation Administration could bind the city to continued airport operations because federal grants typically require airports to remain open unless the agency approves closure.

Councilmembers supporting the direction included Mayor Aaron Brockett, Mayor Pro Tem Tara Winer, and councilmembers Taishya Adams, Matt Benjamin, and Rob Kaplan.

Opposing the direction were councilmembers Tina Marquis, Ryan Schuchard, Nicole Speer, and Mark Wallach.

Some councilmembers supporting the move expressed concern about the cost of operating the airport without federal assistance. City officials estimated it could cost roughly $600,000 per year for the next 14 years if Boulder declines FAA grants.

Opponents raised concerns about making such a long-term decision through an informal straw poll rather than a public hearing, and about limiting future options for the airport property.

The airport debate has been ongoing for years. In 2024, the city sued the FAA seeking a ruling that would allow Boulder to close the airport once federal grant obligations expire, which the city estimated could occur around 2040. The case was later dismissed on procedural grounds, and the city chose not to appeal.

That same year, residents affiliated with the Airport Neighborhood Campaign gathered more than 3,000 signatures for a ballot measure that would have asked voters whether to close the airport and repurpose the land, often discussed as a potential site for housing. The measure was later withdrawn while the city’s lawsuit was pending.

City officials are expected to bring back a formal resolution reflecting the council’s direction for a vote at a future meeting.

An early morning wildfire near west Boulder prompted evacuation warnings on Wednesday before firefighters quickly contained the blaze.

The Goat Trail Fire was reported around 3 a.m. April 8, burning roughly 500 feet west of Hawthorne Avenue near 4th Street, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Initial estimates placed the fire between two and three acres, but a later drone assessment revised the size to about 1.93 acres.

Authorities issued an evacuation warning for areas west of the 200 block of Hawthorne Avenue, and Boulder Police officers went door-to-door in nearby neighborhoods, including Acorn Lane, advising residents to prepare to leave if conditions worsened.

Officials said residents who needed extra time — particularly those requiring medical equipment or medications — were encouraged to begin evacuating early.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including Boulder Fire-Rescue, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Police Department, Jamestown Fire Protection District, and Sunshine Fire Protection District.

By 8:30 a.m., evacuation warnings were lifted, and residents were allowed to return home. Fire officials reported the blaze was 100% contained as of 9:20 a.m.

“Anytime we issue a warning, we always tell people, if you need to gather your medical equipment or medication or you need a little extra time, even though things are looking a little bit better right now, we want to make sure people are ready,” Vinny Montez with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials also noted that dry conditions and unseasonably warm temperatures in the foothills increase wildfire risk this time of year.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Mayor Andrew Moore will host a State of the Town event on Thursday, April 2, from 6–8 p.m. at Town Hall, 645 Holbrook Street. The event will include a presentation from the mayor and town leadership on current projects and policy issues, followed by a question-and-answer session with residents. Participation will be available both in person and via livestream.

According to a post published on the mayor’s Facebook page, the event will begin with a 30–45 minute presentation before moving into a moderated question-and-answer session. Questions submitted in advance are expected to be addressed first, with additional questions taken from attendees if time allows.

Moore said the presentation will cover a range of topics, including recent population growth, new business openings, the town’s transition to voting districts, and the search for Erie’s next town manager.

The mayor also said the event will include updates on infrastructure projects such as the Erie Bee on-demand transit program, expansion of police facilities, and preliminary work connecting County Line Road to Airport Drive. Other topics expected to be discussed include the Draco oil and gas project, water supply challenges, development of the Page Property, and future capital improvement planning.

Residents are encouraged to submit questions ahead of the event by emailing amoore@erieco.gov. Questions will also be taken during the meeting, time permitting.

A gathering of concerned citizens is meeting at 5 p.m. at Town Hall to discuss their concerns about the direction the town is moving.

Among the issues cited by residents since Mayor Andrew Moore took office are:

• Several major decisions have been approved on 4–3 council votes, with Mayor Andrew Moore joined by Mayor Pro Tem Brandon Bell and councilmembers Brian O’Connor and John Mortellaro forming the majority voting bloc.
• The removal of Pride and Juneteenth flags from town facilities after the council majority voted to limit flags flown on town property to the U.S. flag.
• Approval of a $70,000 community survey contract, an amount residents say was roughly double the typical cost of similar municipal surveys.
• Revisions to the town’s Comprehensive Plan that removed provisions allowing developers to more easily incorporate mixed-use housing.
• The termination of the Town Administrator, which became public after three councilmembers declined to enter executive session, requiring the discussion to occur in open session.
• Communications between the mayor and St. Scholastica Church regarding a potential land swap involving property previously identified for affordable housing. The discussions came to light through public records requests, and some councilmembers have said they were unaware of the talks at the time they occurred.
• Negotiations related to the potential sale of the town’s mineral rights, which residents say have largely taken place in executive session without public discussion. The town has also hired a consultant who previously served as COO of Civitas Resources to facilitate negotiations, with a reported contract valued at $4.5 million.
• Approval of the Redtail Ranch settlement and preliminary plat, allowing residential development to move forward on land that includes a restricted environmental area and active oil and gas wells within and adjacent to the project site.

[ Boulder County ]

• The Colorado Department of Public Health alerted residents of Broomfield, Lafayette, Louisville, and Westminster of a reported case of measles in the area. Since the initial alert the number of known cases had grown to seven.
• Highlighting the ongoing concerns of safe streets, a 75-year-old cyclist from Lafayette was struck by a dump truck and killed on Highway 119.
• Despite vocal opposition from residents, the City of Boulder decided to renew their contract with Flock Safety to continue using Flock cameras in the city. 
• Thousands of residents of Boulder and Jefferson counties found themselves without power as Xcel instituted a public safety power shutoff starting on March 14. The decision was driven by a heightened risk of fire along the front range.
• North Metro Fire Rescue District crews had an unusual call in March. They reported to a Broomfield area field that had become a temporary landing strip when a small plane made an emergency landing there. No one was injured.

[ State ]

• Due to the unusually high temperatures across the state this winter, several snow-reliant businesses, such as Ruby Hill in Denver, were forced to close early for the year.
• The Bureau of Land Management acquired the 4,000-acre Escalante Ranch located inside the Uncompahgre Plateau. The purchase was made using a $6.9 million allocation from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. 
• Colorado lawmakers are working on a set of bills they call “guardrails” to protect LGBTQ+ students. The bills would require private schools participating in tax-credit programs to abide by nondiscrimination laws.
• Following a 79% vote of no-confidence by the Colorado Republican Party’s Central Committee, Colorado GOP Chairwoman Brita Horn announced she will step aside from her role in April.

[ National News ]

• The United States and Israel attacked Iran, killing the country’s Supreme Leader in the process. President Trump described the action as a war even though only Congress has the constitutionally-appointed right to declare an act of war.
• Meta found that the consumption of “short-form videos” can degrade the cognitive and psychological health of the person watching. 
• In a rare rebuke, the Supreme Court, by a 6 to 3 vote, shot down President Trump’s broad tariffs which he levied with the mistaken belief that he had the power to do so under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. After lashing out at the decision, Trump said he would replace the now-invalid tariffs with a 10% levy through the Trade Act of 1974. The next day he upped that to a 15% unilateral tariff.

Despite the suspect’s criminal history, the serious nature of this crime, and the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office asking for a $20,000 secured bond, County Court Judge Eang Man gave the suspect a $1,000 bond with the option to only pay $100 to be released.

“This incident is deeply troubling—not only because one of our officers was injured as a direct result of a suspect fleeing, but because it highlights the very real dangers that drug trafficking poses to our entire community,” Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said. “I also have serious concerns about whether the full risk to our community, the severity of this incident, and risk to and impact on our officers was reflected in the bond decision. This is a pattern that is frustrating because these bond decisions directly impact community safety and the well-being of the men and women who serve Boulder, as well as their families.”

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said, “This defendant is charged with a serious drug felony. It is especially aggravated because it happened in a public space in downtown Boulder. Then, the defendant caused significant and scary injuries to the police officer who attempted to enforce the law. I’m very thankful that the officer has been discharged from the hospital. Given the defendant’s criminal history, his actions here, and the injuries suffered by the officer, our prosecutor asked for a high, secured bond. That was definitely the right thing to do. Our office will continue to fight for justice in this case.”

The incident began at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, when officers were patrolling on foot in Central Park at 1236 Canyon Blvd. after receiving community complaints about drug dealing as well as calls of overdoses in the area. Officers saw a woman smoking suspected methamphetamine and while speaking with her, she pointed to a man near the creek who she said had sold her the drugs.

Officers then spoke with that man, but when they asked him to sit down, he started to run away. An officer gave chase and the pair fell into the creek during the struggle to take him into custody. Despite the suspect landing on top of the officer and the officer hitting his head on a rock in the water, the officer managed to get up, hold on to the suspect and get him into custody with other officers before he collapsed. His fellow officers called for an ambulance and the officer was transported to the hospital. The officer suffered a serious concussion and cuts and bruises but has thankfully been discharged and is recovering at home.

“According to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, there were 26 fatal drug overdoses in the City of Boulder in 2025, many occurring in public spaces. This is exactly why our officers were proactively working to identify and stop those who are selling dangerous, potentially deadly drugs in our city,” Chief Redfearn said. “Last night, our officers were doing exactly what our community has asked of us. If the water levels in the creek were lower, or higher, this situation could have easily resulted in a life-altering or even fatal outcome. We are incredibly grateful that our officer was not severely injured.”

The suspect in this crime—Kai Brown (date of birth 12/06/1976)—was found with several individually-packaged baggies of suspect methamphetamine. He was charged with:

• 18-8-103 – Resisting Arrest – Misdemeanor
• 18-8-104 – Obstructing a Peace Officer – Misdemeanor
• 18-18-405 –Distribution of a Level 1 Drug – Misdemeanor
• 18-18-403.5 – Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Misdemeanor

•Several Colorado school districts have brought forward a federal lawsuit that challenges the state’s anti-discrimination law, violating students’ rights by allowing transgender youth to play on school sports teams that match their gender identity.

•ICE agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, an Intensive Care nurse, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The agents claimed they murdered him in self-defense. Cell phone footage contradicts this claim.

•A partial government shutdown began on February 14 when Democrats refused to support legislation that would continue to fund the Department of Homeland Security. They have said they will not support any funding measures until oversights and reforms for immigration officers are made.

•Gladys West, the mathematician honored in the historical film Hidden Figures and whose work helped pave the way for GPS, passed away at 95.

•Russian airstrikes have left over 6,000 homes in Ukraine without power amid freezing temperatures.

•At least 61 people are dead, and 110 are injured, after severe rain and snowfall in Afghanistan, with 458 homes completely destroyed.

•The Chinese military’s top general, Zhang Youxia, is being investigated for suspected serious violations of discipline and law, the Defense Ministry said Saturday during a military purge.

Jason Brandt and the Build-Out with Something Slight @ Roots Music Hall

Hosted by the Louisville Chamber of Commerce, this 21+ event will host tastings from the best breweries, distilleries, and wineries around. Louisville Labor Day Festival

Hang out in Louisville for a weekend full of Labor Day festivities. Starting on Friday, August 29, there will be a senior dinner for residents 60 and up, at Steinbaugh Pavilion. Starting at 5pm, this event is free.

Closing the long weekend, Monday morning starts with the Children’s Pet Parade. Starting at 9am, this is open to any child under the age of 12 and any dog, cat, bunny, or farm animal. Entrants must register by August 29; all children will receive a prize and a popcycle.

Following the Children’s Pet Parade is the Annual Louisville Labor Day Parade. Unions, businesses, local high school marching bands, and citizens march down the city streets starting at 10 am.

Finally, the Fall Festival runs from 10 am to 1 pm at Memory Square Park. Local crafts and artisans whill be selling their work. This year, Louisville is also bringing back it’s pie-eating contest. Sign up to make a pie or to compete.

Tedeschi Trucks Band @ Red Rocks Amphitheater

For two nights, the Tedeschi Trucks Band will bring their unique blend of rock and blues to Morrison, Colorado. The twelve-member band is fronted by a married power couple, multiple Grammy winner Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, a generational member of the Allman Brothers Band. Their show is sure to have songs from the most recent album, “I am the Moon” as well as their most popular numbers. Tickets start at $145 for one night and $460 for two nights and are available through AXS.

Rayland Baxter and Langhorne Slim @ The Fox Theater

Rayland Baxter, an indie musician whose music leans more towards alternative country, is touring in celebration of his most recent album, “If I Were a Butterfly.” The album was created while baxter lived alone in an abandoned rubberband factory, honing in on his connectedness with the natural world. Also performing is Longhorn Slim, a musician whose music spans a range from folk to country to blues. Langhorne’s music can be heard in major movie soundtracks, as well as in dive bars. Tickets start at $46 through Z2 Entertainment.

Red Wanting Blue @ Roots Music Hall

Deemed Midwest Rock Heroes, Red Wanting Blue have been performing over the past two decades, moving up from the indie rock scene to playing on NPR and Letterman. The band is touring in honor of their most recent studio album, “The Wanting.” Labeled as powerful and authentic, reviewers have likened the lead singer to an early Phil Collins. The band states this is their most collaborative album to date, making it a one-of-a-kind show. Tickets start at $29 through Eventbrite.

Rhiannon Giddens and The Olde Time Revue @ Chautauqua Amphitheater

Rhiannon Giddens has made a beautiful career out of studying and playing historical folk-inspired music. Not only does Giddens have two well-deserved Grammy wins, but she has also received a MacArthur Genius Grant, a Pulitzer Prize, and has composed music for the main stage of ballet, opera, and television. Her music is most well-known for her groups The Carolina Chocolate Drops and Our Native Daughters. Tickets start at $56 through Z2 Entertainment.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival @ the University of Colorado

The yearly event at the University of Colorado, the theater festival, has taken over the campus every year since 1958. The festival works to keep the spirit of Shakespeare alive through artistry and education. All plays are performed outside, under the night sky. This year, the plays shown will be The Tempest, Richard II, and Doctor Faustus. Tickets start at $26 through CU Presents.

The Body’s Still Warm: Online Dating for Divorced, Desperate, and Everybody Else @ The Dairy Arts Center

A comedic play about a 62-year-old woman who is entering the online dating world. A feel good, and laugh-out-loud performance, the play follows the hero through her struggles of dating as she comes to find friendship and community in the world around her. You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown @ The Arts Hub

A family-friendly classic, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is playing three nights, hosted by The Arts Hub. The play follows the classic adventures of the Peanuts gang, as Charlie Brown works his way through friendship with the help of his pal Snoopy. Oklahoma Dinner Theater @ Jesters Dinner Theater and Performing Arts

The classic musical, Oklahoma, is set to end its weekly run. With a weekend performances, you can enjoy dinner and a show while taking in the old-timey performances of a farm girl falling in love. The show is hosted by the Longmont Theater Company.

[ Boulder County ]

• Pride flags are returned to Erie after Mayor Andrew Moore removed them during Pride Month, stating that they were no longer in accordance with town policy, which said only the United States or Colorado flag could be flown.
• Formal charges were brought against the 28-year-old man who attacked at least ten people in Boulder over two days starting on June 27th. The man is charged with one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, seven counts of attempted second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, harassment, three counts of menacing, criminal mischief, and third-degree assault
• Boulder County ends its 360 Foster Care program, which is its in-house initiative to help families, moving to a fee-for-service model to create more financial stability.
• The town of Nederland is set to buy the ski resort, Eldora. The resort is currently owned by the POWDR corporation; however, if the purchase goes through, the town of Nederland could see millions of dollars in revenue in the coming years.
• Boulder County prepares to launch its Climate Equity Fund grants, which will provide $2.5 million to community-led sustainability programs that are losing federal funding.

[ State]

• Wildfire season has arrived, with several fires taking off on the Western Slope of the state, including on the South Rim of the Black Canyon National Park.
• Nebraska announces a suit against Colorado, stating that the 1923 South Platte Agreement is not being upheld and that too much water is being diverted from the state of Nebraska.
• Two women in Mesa County were sentenced after their 2024 crime of stealing ballots during the national election. Vicki Stuart, the mail carrier who took the ballots, was charged with five years in prison, while her accomplice, Sally Maxton, walked away with just 100 hours of community service.
• Rare fossils were found under the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which could not be more conveniently located for researchers.

[ National ]

• After fellow western state republicans spoke up, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Mike Lee (R-Utah) withdrew his provision to sell public lands on the GOP megabill.
• Elmo, of Sesame Street Fame, had his public X (formerly Twitter) account hacked. The hacker proceeded to let out a slew of racist and anti-Semitic tweets before being stopped. This is added to a slew of similar chatbot hacks on the site in the past few months..
• America celebrated its 250th birthday. The America250 Commission is celebrating by creating a time capsule representing all 50 states, featuring 250 statues of historical figures, and funding field trips to historic monuments.
• A coalition of 20 states’ Attorney Generals gather to sue the Trump administration over FEMA’s illegally terminated pre-disaster mitigation.

[ International ]

• Contrary to statements made by Trump, the United States’ bombing attack on Iran did not destroy “all of their nuclear capabilities” and, in fact, only impacted one out of three known sites.
• The United Nations Development Program makes a plea to allow more fuel into Gaza. According to the commission, without the fuel, more than 2.1 million people will lose their lifelines.
• Over the weekend of July 12, the Sudanese paramilitary group Rapid Support Force raided and burned several villages, leading to the death of at least 300 citizens. This brings the death toll of the Sudanese civil war to somewhere between 40,000-150,000 since 2023.
• The United Kingdom lowers the voting age from 18 to 16 in an attempt to strengthen democracy and gather more engaged voters.

Representative Junie Joseph Attends Clean Energy Legislative Academy, Champions Inclusive, Affordable Energy Future for Colorado

Boulder, CO – Representative Junie Joseph proudly participated in the Clean Energy Legislative Academy (CELA) hosted by the Center for the New Energy Economy (CNEE) at Colorado State University, inspired and energized to advance bold, bipartisan clean energy solutions for Colorado.

Held in Golden, Colorado, from July 8th to July 11th, the Academy brought together a dynamic and diverse group of state legislators from across the country to exchange ideas, dive into emerging energy technologies, and explore practical, people-first policy strategies. Rep. Joseph joined with colleagues to examine the challenges and opportunities ahead as Colorado and the nation transition to a clean energy economy.

“As we craft energy policy, we must ask—who are we leaving behind in the discourse?” said Rep. Joseph. “This Academy reminded me that good energy policy must center people—especially those too often excluded from the conversation—while balancing environmental stewardship, economic resilience, and consumer protection.”

CELA sessions focused on supply and demand economics, transportation transformation, grid modernization, and equitable energy access. For Rep. Joseph, the experience reaffirmed the importance of affordability, consumer representation, and inclusive innovation—particularly as Colorado works to decarbonize its transportation system and empower communities to thrive in a clean energy future.

Rep. Joseph also announced that in the upcoming legislative session, she will prioritize transit equity legislation designed to help get more Coloradans out of their cars and into accessible, affordable public transportation—reducing emissions and expanding mobility options for working families and underserved communities. In addition, she plans to work on strengthening Colorado’s transmission infrastructure, a critical but often overlooked part of the energy system that ensures clean energy generated across the state can be reliably delivered where it’s needed most.

“Clean energy isn’t just about solar panels and wind farms—it’s about affordable utility bills, accessible transit, and resilient local economies,” she said. “I’m committed to ensuring that our state’s clean energy transition doesn’t leave behind working families, rural communities, or those who already carry the heaviest burdens.”

As a member of the Colorado General Assembly, Rep. Joseph is a staunch advocate for energy equity and sustainable infrastructure. Denver, CO – Today a judge granted a preliminary injunction against key provisions of President Donald Trump’s March 25, 2025 executive order attempting to overhaul elections and impose strict requirements to register to vote in federal elections. Colorado had joined 18 other states on April 3, 2025 in filing a lawsuit challenging that order.

Secretary of State Jena Griswold issued the following statement:

“Rather than encourage people to make their voice heard, Trump wants to prevent eligible Americans from exercising their sacred right to vote. I will keep fighting whenever Trump attempts to attack our democracy and democratic values.”

But that doesn’t mean that your local area doesn’t have plenty of opportunities for you to don that cute bathing suit you picked up over the winter and swore you would find an opportunity to wear this summer. Boulder Creek
It may not be big for swimming, but one thing that Boulder Creek is known for is tubing, which is a lot of fun in the summer. With a lot of snowmelt, the creek tends to be nice and cool, even in the summer.

Since the days when Yellow Scene Magazine (YS) was printed on actual yellow paper, we’ve tried to give you a little bit of insight into the music community. Sometimes we found an interesting story about an artist in your backyard that you really ought to be listening to. But, on more than a few occasions, we managed to pull an interview with a fairly big-name artist for a small indie magazine based out of East Boulder County.

I recently took over doing our artist interview spotlights for our last few issues. I have a good amount of experience with interviewing musicians for other publications, but YS is a little different. Either you’re looking to find the interesting story in an up-and-coming artist that the reader hasn’t heard of yet, or you’re trying to find the appeal of a big-name artist for our particular corner of Colorado. In a lot of ways, it’s about finding the stories behind the music that are smaller, but still fascinating.

To celebrate 25 years of YS, we decided to pore over the artist interviews from the past 25 years to pick our 25 favorite interviews. While a lot of them are with the big-name artists we consider ourselves lucky to have gotten a chance to feature, a few of them are from local artists with really interesting stories. But that’s the one thing that unites these 25 interviews: they were all instances where we found riveting stories behind the music that are still interesting to this day.

Our interview with singer/songwriter Jason Mraz came out when his song “I’m Yours” was becoming popular (and it remains his highest charting song to date). Mraz told us it was his “happy little hippy” song about generosity of spirit and giving your time to someone else, and explained how time in Hawaii and a visit to Bob Marley’s house in Jamaica inspired the tune. He explained that he wrote the song in a stream-of-consciousness style by simply picking up the guitar and seeing what he came up with. He was also donating his tour proceeds at the time to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, which was fighting to keep music education in schools.

Irish Rockers Flogging Molly, September 2009

Irish band Flogging Molly isn’t the first band to combine Celtic music influences with punk rock, but they are definitely one of the most genuine and authentic bands to do it. In our interview with them, they explained how they thrived on a smaller indie label (at the time, all of their releases had been through SideOneDummy Records, which has gotten a bit bigger since then). They explained that industry professionals told them that their style of music wasn’t going to catch on, so they opted to take matters into their own hands rather than relying on a music industry that thought they were destined to fail.

Spotlight on Mandy Harvey, August 2010

The story of local jazz singer Mandy Harvey is genuinely one of the most unique and fascinating stories we’ve ever had in an artist interview. Harvey grew up in Longmont with dreams of being a singer, and trained her entire life to achieve her dream, only to be dealt a crippling setback in adulthood when she went deaf from progressive nerve damage affecting her cochlear nerves. After deciding, on a whim, to put together a recording of “Come Home” by One Republic for her husband while he was away on a trip, she came to the realization that her singing career was not over, saying that, “a light came on in my head that music was just another thing I needed to do differently.” The amazing singer, who has perfect pitch, by the way, later went on to be a contestant on the 12th season of “America’s Got Talent,” where she performed her own original work.

John Medeski, February 2011

Keyboardist John Medeski has been playing with his band Medeski, Martin, & Wood since 1991, playing a unique style of jazz fusion that incorporates funk, hip-hop, and even jam band elements into their sound. 2011 marked the 20th anniversary of the band’s formation, and we got a chance to talk to Medeski about their longevity as a band. According to Medeski, the band managed to survive changes in the music industry because, as an instrumental band, they never relied on radio play or record sales as their main source of income, but rather focused on selling tickets to their electrifying live show. As someone who has seen Medeski, Martin, & Wood live, I can confirm that their live performance is enough to win over anyone who doesn’t think an instrumental band has a lot to offer.

Hanson, September 2011

Everybody remembers Hanson for their 1997 pop hit “MMMBop,” which came out when the band members were literal children. What a lot of people don’t know is that Hanson is still around today and continues to release albums and tour with a much more mature sound now that they’re well into adulthood. In our interview, we talked with Taylor Hanson about his feelings on their first hit single, “MMMBop,” and how it was 14 years later. Hanson said that, while he would like the band to be noticed for their complete body of work, he still has positive feelings about their first monumental hit single. “There’s no question you always desire for people to have a wide and varied perspective on your career beyond a few hit songs,” he explained, “but you also have to be proud of anything that can reach millions of people, especially when it is with something that you created and has meaning to people.”

Four Questions with Pop Favorite: G. Love, January 2012

Garrett Dutton, aka G. Love — frontman of the trio G. Love & The Special Sauce who blew up onto the alternative music scene in the mid-’90s with their unique mixture of soul, blues, funk, and hip-hop — sat down with us in 2012 to discuss the history of the band as it approached its 20-year anniversary. When asked about what Dutton missed most about the early days of the band, Dutton said that he missed the “innocence and blindness” of being a 20-year-old who thought he knew everything while driving around to do 250 shows a year in a “crappy van.” Now that he had a tour bus and lost that blind innocence, it seemed like some of the magic was gone.

10 Questions With Jazz Great Ron Carter, October 2012

Ron Carter has been involved with a lot of different projects as a jazz musician, ranging from his early breakthrough as a member of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet to his appearance on alt-hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest’s seminal 1991 jazz-rap album “Low End Theory.” In the interview, Carter explained that his upbringing in Detroit didn’t inspire his jazz career because, when he left Detroit around the age of 17 or 18, he was still playing classical music. It wasn’t until he got to New York and became influenced by the likes of Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, and Charles Mingus that he got turned on to the magic of jazz.

Weird Al Yankovic Talks Parodies, Movies and Children’s Books, June 2013

“Weird Al” Yankovic is a music legend for his parodies of songs, and most musicians consider it an honor and a privilege rather than an insult to be parodied by the legendary comic artist. But in our interview, we talked to Yankovic a little bit about one of his then-new endeavours of writing a children’s book called “When I Grow Up.” In the time since the interview, he wrote a second children’s book called “My New Teacher and Me!” Yankovic explained that he had always wanted to write children’s books and, when an editor from Harper Collins named Anne Hoppe approached him randomly and told him that his clever wordplay would work well in children’s books, he jumped at the chance to fulfill one of his dreams.

Ani DiFranco, March 2015

LGBTQ+ icon and seasoned indie folk artist Ani DiFranco has been a trailblazer in independent music both for her creative talent and her business sense. We talked to her about how her decision to start her own label, Righteous Babe, instead of tying herself to a big label was groundbreaking and almost as important as her music, but she didn’t seem to agree. She said that she gained fans with her music, not her decision to go independent, and that that’s what her staying power has been in her career, which has spanned, at this point, about 35 years.

Duran Duran, September 2015

British new wave legends Duran Duran stopped in Colorado in 2015 to promote their 14th album as a band, Paper Gods. The band took us through some of the details of the two years they spent working on the album and how they connected with collaborators for the album. The first collaborator that contacted them was Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. The band wasn’t looking to collaborate with anyone, but felt they couldn’t turn down such a talented guitarist as Frusciante. Saying yes to Frusciante opened the door to further collaborations with the likes of Nile Rodgers, who co-produced the album, as well as another co-producer named Mr. Hudson, who has worked with Kanye West and Jay-Z. The result was one of the best albums of Duran Duran’s long and storied career.

Tammy Ealom’s Denver-based indie pop band, Dressy Bessy, holds a lot of distinctions that give them indie cred including having had their songs featured in the cult queer classic film “But I’m a Cheerleader” as well as being one of the few Denver-based bands to be part of the legendary Elephant 6 collective. In 2016, we talked to Ealom about the story behind the band’s sixth studio album, “Kingsized,” which was their first album in eight years. Ealom said she never thought of the time in between as a hiatus because she was writing the whole time. The death of her father and the economic impact of the recession were major factors that she cited as the reason for the gap between albums.

Multi-instrumentalist and percussionist Bill Summers has had a lot of major accomplishments in his career, but the one that probably stands out the most is his work on the iconic jazz-funk fusion album “Head Hunters” by Herbie Hancock. In this interview, Summers took us through his journey from dropping out of high school, to working at a racetrack, to winning enough money to go to California and enroll UC Berkeley as a music major where he put together a band that opened for Hancock, leading to him being invited to participate in one of the most important jazz albums of all time.

Spotlight: It’s Times Like These We Need Flobots Most, May 2017

Hip-hop group Flobots may be remembered by the rest of the country as a one-hit wonder for their 2007 hit “Handlebars,” but in Colorado, they’re known for being a pillar of the local hip-hop scene and political activists. In the interview, MC Johnny 5 (aka James Laurie), told us about the Flobots’ mentor, the late Vincent Harding, who was a social activist and Professor of Religion and Social Transformation at Iliff School of Theology in Denver. Harding encouraged the band to think more deeply about what protest music really was, so the band started gathering people together to come up with songs that could be sung at rallies, which became the basis for Flobots’ 2017 album “Noenemies.”

Spotlight on Josh Barrett of The Wailers, March 2018

Reggae band The Wailers were once the backing band for the legendary Bob Marley, but since his death in 1981, they’ve soldiered on without him. In 2018, we talked with the band’s then-vocalist Josh Barrett about filling the huge shoes of Marley, and he spoke about his journey from singing in church choir, to learning instruments from his community, to starting his band, Judah Tribe, which had the opportunity to open for the Wailers in 2012. Barrett talked about the privilege of fronting such a legendary band and how the music that Marley wrote is still relevant today.

Spotlight on Bill Frisell, June 2018

Bill Frisell is not just a legendary guitarist — having appeared as a session musician on tons of albums, not to mention his solo material and his long-standing working relationship with the legendary John Zorn — he’s a local legend, having grown up in Denver and graduated from Denver’s East High School. In this interview, Frisell talked to us about how he started playing music with neighborhood kids, but he owes a lot of his musical education to music programs in local schools like Teller Elementary and the now-defunct Gove Junior High. “I’m so glad they still have a music program in Denver because in so many places it goes away,” Frisell told us.

Brian Setzer is famous for his role in the legendary rockabilly group Stray Cats as well as his role in the ‘90s swing revival when his band, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, covered Louis Prima’s “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail.” In this interview, when he was promoting his latest “Rockabilly Riot!” album, we talked to him about the changes in the music industry since he started, and he talked about the changes in how important record sales and music videos were and how so much has shifted to the importance of live performances. Luckily, Brian Setzer could always put on a good live show.

Iconic grunge band Stone Temple Pilots has had bad luck with frontmen, with both of their first two lead singers — Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington — having died at tragically young ages. Former Dry Cell frontman and “X-Factor” contestant Jeff Gut became the third person to step into the lead vocalist spot in the band, and we talked to him about the process of auditioning for the gig. He talked about how nerve-wracking it was to meet a band he had admired for so many years, but eventually his idols turned to friends as they worked together on the band’s second self-titled record.

It’s hard to talk about the Denver music scene without bringing up the dark, indie folk powerhouse that is DeVotchKa, who rose to prominence in 2006 with their talked-about performance at Bonnaroo as well as their score for the Oscar-winning film Little Miss Sunshine. In 2018, the band released their album “This Night Falls Forever,” their first record in seven years, and we talked to them about the gap between albums. They said that, with all the opportunities they had gotten since their previous album — including working with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and being involved with movies like “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and “Paddington” — they had to take the time to make their new album as grand as all their other side projects.

SPOTLIGHT on Tivoli Club Brass Band, April 2019

Denver’s Tivoli Club Brass Band isn’t your traditional brass band, with their 2019 debut album featuring covers of Queen, Taylor Swift, The White Stripes, and even Aretha Franklin. In our interview, bandleader and percussionist Dean Hirschfield talked about the band’s origins, which apparently started with a meal at Jose O’Shea’s in Lakewood when someone asked, “What would the song ‘Seven Nation Army’ sound like if it were played by a brass band?” They also talked about the Kickstarter campaign to finance their album, which was initially planned to be an EP. However, after the overwhelming support for Kickstarter, they decided they might as well put out an LP.

Spotlight: Jimbo Mathus and the Squirrel Nut Zippers, June 2019

Squirrel Nut Zippers are somewhat of a relic of the short-lived neo-swing craze in the 1990s, despite the fact that they didn’t quite fit in with the other swing bands with their neo-vaudevillian style. We talked to the band three years into their reunion and talked to founder and frontman Jimbo Mathus about why he chose to reunite the band in 2016. Mathus said that he thought of just doing a few shows around the 20th anniversary of their 1996 album “Hot,” but decided that there was so much theatricality and musicianship that went into the band that doing a few one-off shows seemed hardly worth it, and it would be better to revive the whole band and jump back into the swing of things, so to speak.

Spotlight on Lynyrd Skynyrd, October 2019

Lynyrd Skynyrd was probably the biggest name band that we have ever interviewed. At the time, the band’s so-called farewell tour was coming through Fiddler’s Green, and we talked to the band’s guitarist, Rickey Medlocke, about why they were retiring from touring. Medlocke talked about how it was no secret that founding guitarist Gary Rossington was having heart issues and the band could no longer handle rigorous touring. Still, Medlocke assured us the band was not completely done and might record another album and play one-off shows. “The funny thing about this all is — when you’re a musician that’s been playing for as long as we’ve been playing, you just don’t wake up one day and say, ‘Okay, I’m going to put my instrument down that I’ve had this big love affair with for 50-60 years,’ and not pick it up anymore and not want to play music or anything like that,” Medlocke told us. Sadly, Rossington died in 2023, but the band continued on and did another tour with ZZ Top in 2023-2024.

Spotlight on Reese Roper and Five Iron Frenzy, March 2021

Since their founding in 1995, Denver’s own ska band Five Iron Frenzy has made a career out of Christian-ish music, but it was always a more progressive form of Christianity than what we’ve come to expect from the religious right. Frontman Reese Roper talked to us about his brand of Christianity and said he didn’t align with the right-wing form of the religion, which he chalked up to a plot between Richard Nixon and Jerry Falwell to turn the Republican party into the Christian party by using wedge issues like abortion to garner Christian votes. “There are so many diabolical things that have been done in the name of Jesus Christ in this world,” Roper told us. “But, I cling to the character of Christ. I know that what He offers is redemption and forgiveness.”

Spotlight on Taj Mahal, March 2022

Legendary blues musician Taj Mahal is one of the most prolific and enduring musicians in the genre, having put out over 50 albums in the course of about 60 years. We talked to him about what was, at the time, his most recent album, “Get On Board,” which was a collaboration with fellow music legend Ry Cooder. Mahal told us about how Cooder had worked with him on the 1966 album “Rising Sons Featuring Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder” and on Mahal’s 1968 self-titled album. After Cooder and Mahal ran into each other and started hanging out again, they decided to collaborate again, but the pandemic got in the way until 2021, when restrictions had lifted enough for the two great guitarists to work together again.

Spotlight on Faceman, December 2022

FaceMan is both the name of a Denver-based indie-American trio and the stage name of the band’s mysterious frontman, Steve Schnepel, who performs in various masks and costumes that give him different faces. Schnepel told us that the idea was inspired by his youth when his father told him he had a “rubber face,” and, in 2008, after taking a brief hiatus from music, Schnepel came up with the vision of a band he could front anonymously with a constantly changing face. The idea really took off when he met designers Justin Hicks, Katie Webster, and Kellie Sequoia from the Denver Center who elevated his basic idea into an even bigger spectacle.

Dervish Takes the Stage with Traditional Irish Music | Spotlight, February 2025

Traditional Irish band Dervish has been lighting up stages with their unique take on Irish music for almost four decades now, since the early days when the original members met at a pub and named themselves the Boys of Silgo, after their hometown in Ireland. We talked to them about their music, which is about 90% traditional songs, and they explained how there’s still a lot of writing and creating that goes into playing traditional songs, including creating new arrangements, harmonies, and instrumental breaks, to the point where traditional music practically becomes their own.

We at Yellow Scene Magazine (YS) recently posted a press release from anti-trans hate group Gays Against Groomers stating their opposition to the Kelly Loving Act, which gives more protections to trans people. Sometimes, in the flurry of reporting on news daily, things slip through the cracks that we do not intend. We want to make it absolutely clear that we do not support this group or what they stand for. As a company that employs multiple trans people, myself included, we reject Gays Against Groomers’ anti-trans stance. YS has always supported the entire LGBTQ+ community throughout our entire 25-year history.

Gays Against Groomers are part of the very vocal minority in the LGBTQ+ community that wishes to see LGB people form their own coalition separate from the trans community and other important members of the overall LGBTQ+ community. But ever since the days of the Stonewall Riots, transgender people have been a driving force in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Trans women like Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera were essential to the early movement for queer rights, and trans people today are still on the front lines to protect all the members of this community.

The entire LGBTQ+ community is united by the fact that we experience gender and sexuality in a different way than what is traditional in society. This includes gays, lesbians, bisexuals, asexual people, transgender people, agender people, two-spirit individuals, and intersex people. There can be no movement for gay rights without trans and gay people standing arm in arm together.

The Kelly Loving Act passed yesterday in the Colorado Senate, despite Gays Against Groomers giving inflammatory testimony full of misleading and outright false information. We applaud the passage of this bill, although we are disappointed to see how many sections were struck from the bill to appease a radical, anti-trans lobby. We hope that the State of Colorado continues to be a safe and welcoming place for transgender individuals.

The last few months, our Editor’s Picks section has been focused on getting by in Trump’s America 2.0. But, even as democracy struggles for its continued existence, there’s still things to enjoy in life, such as movies. With summer movie season just around the corner, we thought we’d do something a little more upbeat and list off our most anticipated summer movies.

The Twits

This animated adaptation of the classic 1980 Roald Dahl book follows Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the mean-spirited couple who spend all their time playing pranks on each other. We have high hopes for this one considering that there’s pretty much never been a bad movie adaptation of a Roald Dahl book, from “James and the Giant Peach” to “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” to, of course, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” So this seems likely to be the next great Dahl adaptation when it lands on Netflix on June 13.

Elio

Has there ever been a bad Pixar movie? The answer is no. From the original “Toy Story” to “The Incredibles” to “Inside Out” to “Coco,” the studio has just produced hit after hit after hit. This film, about a young boy obsessed with sci-fi who gets abducted by aliens and mistaken for Earth’s ambassador, promises to be the next great Pixar masterpiece. The movie beams up on June 20.

28 Years Later

Danny Boyle’s 2002 film “28 Days Later” is an absolute zombie classic, as is the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later.” The third film in the franchise plans to take the series to exciting new heights. And, in an interesting twist, significant parts of the film were shot on an iPhone, something that’s pretty much never been done in film before. Catch the fever on June 20.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The beloved superhero team, The Fantastic Four, has seemed to have some sort of curse surrounding its movie adaptations. There was the 1994 version that was so bad it was never released, the overly silly 2005 version and its subsequent sequel, and the less said about the 2015 reboot the better. Now that Marvel Studios got the rights to the team and intends to introduce them into the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems like someone might have finally gotten it right. Flame on with the Fantastic Four on July 25.

Freakier Friday

Lindsay Lohan’s return to the film industry after a number of years of absence continues as she and Jamie Lee Curtis team up once again for a sequel to the 2003 version of “Freaky Friday.” With an even more convoluted body-switcheroo for this sequel, it promises a whole new set of fun hijinks that are sure to satisfy millennial nostalgia. Get freaky on August 8.

Delta Sonics @ Bricks on Main, May 9th, 2025

Denver’s own Delta Sonics have been racking up the accolades for their unique blend of blues with swing, delta, New Orleans R&B, and classic rock ‘n’ roll. They were awarded “best blues band in Denver” in the Westword Music Showcase every year from 2011 through 2016. They were named “Favorite Blues Band” and “Favorite Blues Duo” by Colorado Blues Society in 2023 and 2024, and their member, Al Chesis, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by Colorado Blues Society in 2022. There’s no question that they’re a blues powerhouse right in Colorado’s own backyard, and they’ll be tearing the roof down in Longmont with a swinging show at Bricks on Main on May 9. Matt and Madeline Shugert @ Muse Performance Space

Originally hailing from Crested Butte, Colorado, Matt and Madeline Shugert weave together a unique tapestry of acoustic folk, bluegrass, and jazz, and they find some really creative things to do with it. Their 2020 album The Aim Was Song is a collection of 10 tracks that are each inspired by a different poem from beloved New England poet Robert Frost and turned into lush soundscapes with intricate layers of percussion and stunning vocal harmonies. It’s a performance not to be missed when they take over Muse Performance Space on April 27. Tickets start at $10 for students and $20 for adults at Muse Performance Space.

Art Circle LLC was co-founded by Erie-based artists Kristi Arzola and Peter Buwalda in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. After Peter stepped away, Kristi continued the mission, eventually partnering with artist Kayla Eggemeyer to rebrand the event as the Erie Art Fest under the new Art Circle LLC banner.

Now in its fifth year, the festival continues to flourish thanks to Kristi’s leadership and the invaluable contributions of volunteers and artists. With its 2024 expansion to Soaring Heights PK-8, the Erie Art Festival reflects Art Circle’s unwavering commitment to building community through the arts.

“Art has a powerful way of bringing people together,” says Arzola. “This festival is about more than just showcasing creativity — it’s about creating space for connection, joy, and belonging.”

It seems to be protest season in Colorado, with protesters taking to the streets on multiple occasions to protest the policies and actions of the Trump administration. We wanted to take a moment to run down our five favorite protests to hit the streets thus far.

#50501 Protest on February 5

Protesters came together in all 50 states to protest Trump’s actions at state capitols, and Colorado was no exception with protests, speeches, and marches held all day on February 5. By the time this prints, there will have been a second #50501 protest on March 15.

March 4 Liberty on March 4

Similarly, protesters came together on March 4 to protest the Trump administration’s policies.

Tesla Takedowns

There have been a number of big protests at Tesla dealerships, particularly at the Tesla dealership in Superior, taking advantage of Elon Musk’s well-known brand to make a very visible protest against the billionaire.

International Women’s Day on March 8

Thousands of protesters came together on International Women’s Day to protest for women’s rights causes amidst the Trump administration’s war on women.

The Next Protests

There’s a lot more protests scheduled, including the April 5 event that’s going to be happening all over the country. Keep your ears open for the next big protest in your area.
